Maybe it was when he started, but I think he evolved a lot more over the course of the series. Personal opinion though.

Roland: Hugh Jackman. Unfortunately Clint Eastwood is too old, so I figure Hugh Jackman is the next best thing.

Eddie: Christian Bale. The team up between Jackman and Bale is unbelievable. Check out The Prestige if you haven't seen it.
