... i was gonna make a comment about a good head of beer .. but no matter how it came out it just sounded .. wrong

I used to prefer the "Reds" and Ambers oveer the Dark beers, but as the years go by my taste has seemed to not find enough Body in anything but dark. Even back in high school when I first started drinking I didn't like Regular beer, But fortunately some Americans have seen through the Budweiser hype and now I can readily get Killians Red or Michelob Amber Bock on tap at most any real bar here. Some day I hope to make a trip to Germany or Ireland and do some real Pub Hopping.

Beer is a passion of mine. I love it. I drink way too much of it. I brew my own, and drink beers from all over the world. I have many home brewing sites and beer rating sites saved as favorites in my browser, sites I go to every single day to check the latest news (yes, there is beer news), techniques, and recipes.

So I've got to respond to whoever here said that Americans don't know about beer. This is a misconception that is based on thirty-year-old information. Since the 70s, the American home brewing movement spawned the microbrew movement (which is now called "craft brew" because the micros aren't so small anymore). There are now 100's of small breweries making beers in styles that have never been brewed before. They are reviving styles that are 1000s of years old (as with Dog Fish Head's Midas Touch), and tweaking traditional styles into much bigger, stronger, hoppier versions than anyone ever imagined.

America right now is on the forefront, the cutting edge of the brewing world. Even thre great brewing nations like Belgium and Germany are taking notice, trying their hand at our styles. At the heart of American experimentation are the home brewers, 100s of 1000s of people like me experimenting one batch at a time, sharing their experience in everything from growing their own hops to culturing their own yeast.

For example, one of the trends over the past 5 years or so has been the development of bigger, stronger IPAs (India Pale Ales) into what is known as Imperial or Double IPAs. These monsters clock in at around 9%-12% alcohol, often have IBUs (international bitterness units) of over 100, and are a shock to someone who is not a hophead. They are extremely complex and flavorful--and expensive. A 22oz bomber can run $6.

So as a homebrewer, I take offense at the ignorance which causes this myth to be perpetuated. Those who really know what they're talking about when it comes to beer know that American craft brew and home brew is respected all over the world. Sure, BMC (Bud, Miller, Coors) rule the masses in America, but this is true everywhere. Thin, fizzy, yellow, psuedo-pilsners dominate the world market in most countries. The masses are forgetting what good beer is, not the brewers.
