He's right, it's not very satisfying, and certainly doesn't fit with the explanation that I've had in my mind for more than 20 years.

HA! Found it, but for some strange reason, the search function of the GI doesn't identify this. Wayfriend quoted it in one of the threads that Herem posted in in the DTL forum.dlbpharmd wrote:I've looked and I can't find it. I do remember someone asking at some point how Linden got the ring, and I thought his response was "RAFO."High Lord Tolkien wrote:I've actually been rereading the GI trying to find it again.Romeo wrote:There's no mention of her taking it off of Covenant's hand in the "real" world - and Berenford was there, so he would have noticed. I don't think she went near Covenant's body at all after she got back. So her already having the ring in her hand is a *major* thing - we just don't know what it means yet.
No luck so far though.
But I swear SRD said that he didn't write it because he thought it would be obvious that Linden went over and got the ring from TC.
I'll keep looking though.
SO - if Linden was in some kind of "stupefied state," and physically removed the ring from Covenant's hand, why does SRD say "wait and see"?Are you going to explain how Linden got Covenant's ring? I never quite caught how she ended up with it.

Alas, I can only tell you: wait and see.

Actually, since I'm one of those people who don't think the Land is literally real, I very much like this explanation. He's being consistant with the, "Is the Land real or unreal?" ambiguity. Linden having the ring without walking over and getting it would violate that ambiguity.dlbpharmd wrote:He's right, it's not very satisfying, and certainly doesn't fit with the explanation that I've had in my mind for more than 20 years.
The Law of Death was broken during the Illearth War by Elena. The Law of Life is what you are thinking of - that was broken a few days before TC "died".drew wrote: SRD hinted at the fact that though the ceasures encompass all moments of time, they can't do much from before the law of death was broken..and the law of death was only broken a few days before TC bought it.
To me, the ambiguity went out the door in TWL.Malik23 wrote:Actually, since I'm one of those people who don't think the Land is literally real, I very much like this explanation. What Akasri said... The Law of Life was described as the barrier that prevented the Dead from being just spectators, but they still apparently had to be invoked (or dismissed) by someone of power.Akasri wrote:The Law of Death was broken during the Illearth War by Elena. It seems to me that if someone can be in the land, acting and reacting, and all the while our bodies are doing things in the "stupefied state," then wouldn't that have a major impact on the reality/unreality of the Land, or the real world of TCTC?SO - if Linden was in some kind of "stupefied state," and physically removed the ring from Covenant's hand, why does SRD say "wait and see"?
