There is a kernel of truth in what you say about the midwest, Barad.

I do not smoke weed.
Spoiler
anymore, but if some just appeared out of thin air I would be very tempted to burn one out behind the house then eat a whole bag of Funyuns.

What if I dip it in wine twice first? Since it's alcohol, wouldn't it burn even better or something?

Funyuns? Should I ask?

On the subject of more serious stuff, I think I see the possibility of pot and the like leading to worse things, but I think that ultimately the real thing is that the people who are most at risk are going to be at risk when it's illegal, too (they are!). People drank during prohibition, too, there are certainly arguments things are worse when you enforce them. At the same time, I can see why null feels something is bad, the answer isn't to overlook it because the task of reducing its influence is daunting.

IMO most of the kids I know with drug problems specific to pot, it's more a motivational thing. And those problems were around before they smarted smoking, and I'm not really sure if they were aggravated too much either. No, not enough is done, but for them at least I'm not clear on whether pot is the enemy. The real thing about that stuff, though, is that I'm basically guessing, because I'm not a health expert, cop, or anything or anyone who'd really know stuff.

VS, Holsety, THC unlocks the power and wonder of the crunchy, salty, delectableness known as the Funyun, a munchie wonder on par with the mighty honeynut Cheerio. Unless you have experienced this firsthand, you just don't know, man you just don't know.

Wyldewode, I think you are being too kind with "kernel", though I thank you for it. In an overall sense, the midwest is made up of mostly decent folks. However, I grew up in the "crank" era. I used it regularly, my best friend dealt the stuff, and many of my friend's parents used it.
Many good women became sex slaves for it, and at least three county deputies were suspected of dealing it. The mayor of a nearby town was indicted for possession and intent to distribute. I went to high school with his son, who dealt it in woodshop class. I was named student foreman to help facilitate sales by keeping our teacher busy. Thousands of dollars changed hands daily in one class period.
The man I think of as a father has used it for twenty years. All his teeth are gone and he is having myocardial infarctions every month or two. They think he'll be dead in less than a year. Two people I knew growing up have died from overdoses. Several have done time. One actually started his own robbery ring. (So stupid, in a town of 5000)
Several of my friends managed to break free, some because of me, others in spite of me. (don't ask) I myself have been free of meth for 10 years now, with most of my friends trailing by a year or two.
Marijuana by itself is no more dangerous than alcohol, less so in fact; you cannot overdose on it, and since it causes a feeling of mild euphoria (along with the munchies), it isn't likely to result in drunken rants and rages.
Bear in mind I only support marijuana, not mushrooms or peyote or anything else, but I do support those for religious practices, though I think that should be regulated.

I am strongly opposed to any/all illegal synthetic drugs, and quite a few of the legal ones. I mean mind altering drugs for children? And drugs that only recieve a single year of testing before these drugs go on market? These FDA approved drugs are killing untold numbers of people (any published findings are circumspect, I think you'll agree).
Yet we spend millions every year in a battle against a drug that, at most, increases the obesity problem. (An important problem, no doubt, but one that we could more easily combat with the millions we waste on a lost drug battle, moreover one we would win in a single stroke by it's legalisation and subsequent taxation. ;) )

Wow, I am far more chatty since I've quit smoking.

Great post Barad. :D One-time devils make the best angels. ;) Congratulations.

I pretty much agree with all that. Except I don't have a problem with mushrooms & peyote, but would[/] like them to be regulated as well. Synthetic recreational drugs we can definitely do without.

Similar to the kind alochol has. An age limit for sales at the very least. Quality control, dosage limitations. Maybe a system that would track purchases to prevent people going around and buying multiple times at different places or something.

Barad, I live in southern Missouri, and according to Senator Kit Bond, Missouri is the "Meth Capital of the US." I know whereof you speak. I see it all the time. :?

Sadly, the problem isn't one that can be easily fixed. The soon-to-be seen explosion of biofuels in the midwest will only inflame the problem, I'm afraid.

Hilariously, hemp would actually cut costs for this "new" process, while increasing the amount of ethanol that can be made, yet no one has mentioned it... how strange... 8O
