Bloody Linden. Has to be. It's roughly consistent with the quality of her other ideas.

Nevertheless, it seems clear that the "don't touch us" rule only applies to Linden, at least that we know of: during Covenant's and Jeremiah's flight, mention is made of how Covenant clung to the Haruchai who was leading his horse.
I tend to side with the idea that just like Covenant was identified with white gold, Linden is identified with the Staff of Law (it was also hinted at in the trailer, if you recall). Regarding Covenant, it is worth noting that, as far as I recall, he did touch Linden once after his death, in the SC, but that was before she created the Staff. If so, then obviously this prohibition stems either from the Staff's existence, or from a change in Covenant's nature over the past millennia. Presumably, however, as the Staff is an instrument of Law, and Covenant's manifestation is only possible due to two broken Laws, touching him with the Staff might indeed cause him to disappear.
As for Jeremiah, though... that is a rather disturbing situation. However... there was speculation - fueled by Roger's words in Runes - that Jeremiah's spirit was trapped either in the Land, or between the Land and Earth, ever since the beginning of the Second Chronicles, and therefore the reason why he was unresponsive in the real world (as well as the reason why he could envision and build Revelstone and Mount Thunder) were because his spirit was simply not there, but capable at least of seeing the Land, perhaps lost in the blackness between worlds.
What does this imply? Well, if that's correct, then it means that the summoning ritual which brought Roger, Joan and Linden to the Land could have had a completely different effect on Jeremiah, or no effect at all. If his spirit didn't occupy his earthly body when the ritual took effect and he died, he might be now stuck in a similar situation as Covenant - in that he died in the real world, but he has no real, corporeal body in the Land because the summoning ritual didn't work properly with him. In this case, he would likely be - like Covenant - a spirit of sorts, who presumably could manifest in corporeal form - again, like Covenant - only because of the breaking of the Laws of Life and Death. In this case, it's easy to see how the aforementioned arguments about the Staff of Law could also apply to him.

I agree with vs. Covenant's been through all of this a couple times, and he's been the freakin' Arch of Time for a few thousand years. You'd think he could soften up a little by now? And does he think if the first words she hears from him after all this time are those word in that tone, she'll just immediately follow orders? I'd expect several moments of stunned inactivity, when she wouldn't put it out.

Unless I am reading too much into this, something is 'not quite right' with Jeremiah.
...not that we know enough about him to determine what would be out of character, but the fact that he 'grins hugely' when he tells Linden that if she uses the Staff that it would make them disappear seems raher disconcerting to me.
It seems to me to be leading to another sort of 'Anele' possession, or something along those lines.

Well, our boy Covenant has never had great people skills.
Here's something I forgot to mention before; something that struck me as significant:
Linden notices that Covenant looks younger. Yes, it's true that if he's a spirit now, there's no reason for his appearance to be consistent with the age he was when he died - but it still seems to be more than that, to me. If Covenant's apparent age was irrelevant, it wouldn't have been mentioned, so I feel justified in assuming that there's something important going on there. Now, I can't see Covenant being vain enough to alter his appearance to make himself look younger, so there must be some other influence.
Unless it isn't Covenant. The thing that immediately came to mind for me was Foul having recreated Covenant in some way - and in the way he knows him best. His prime, if you like. *shrug* It's a weak argument, but that was immediate thought upon reading that passage.
By the way, does this mean that Covenant, who was ten years Linden's senior (and now several millennia her senior!) will appear to Liand etc to be a toy boy?

Well its all about the staff and TC's a Jeremiahs reaction to it.
We don't get much else.
I do fear some intervention from the time paradox board which got Dan Simmons out of a brief hole in Hyperion.
The time travel things are fundamental to the story if you ask me.

Some points that Linden Realizes right in the chapter are:
Covenant said to Find HIM...not wait for him to find her...but she didn't find him...he found her.
PLus she realized that the Demondim were herding them into Revelstone...not running after them.
And then there is that bit with Jerry grinning to himself when He tells Linden that she can't touch him.
Seems like a bad scene to me.

Is this the purpose of Esmer? To keep Linden away from Andelain?
If thats the case then there is something there she needs.. Loric's Krill?
To consult with Covenants dead?? Sunder or even the dead Forestal.

Foul has always preferred to let his adversaries destroy that which they hold most dear themselves...

Couldn't sleep and got up early to check out the second half of the chapter.
Not a lot of new information really.
Chapter 2 available July 9th, hope that will provide some more details - TC asks the Masters to give him room and board before he explains stuff to Linden.
TC is doing something with Time that allows him and Jeremiah to be in two places/times at once - if Linden uses the Staff it will snap time back into alignment and they will disappear.
The Demondim were herding TC and company to Revelstone because they thought TC had some sort of power that he could use against them if they (the Demondim) attacked.

Well, I'm even more fired up about FR now!
At least now we have an explanation about
the red car.
At the end of the chapter, all I wanted was for Linden to shut up and let Covenant talk.

Among the shadows cast by the flames, she saw a small muscle beating like a pulse at the corner of his left eye.
Yah there is something really weird here... The Mahdoubt's words about being cautious of love as it is misleading comes to mind... Foul is now being his most subtle and horrible. I beleive these are all elements he had
allowed to happen in order to bring about the despair and downfall of the most potentially powerful person here: Linden.
“No,” Linden said before Covenant--or Jeremiah--could respond. “Handir, stop. Think about this.”
And is it just me or is Linden the only one who wishes to use her brain...?
And, dammit! wouldn't TC be at least a
little offended by the Humbled's self-maiming in his honour! Really! He should be angry!
OKOkok, I know he must have some awareness being part of the Arc of Time, but he should still be offended in his first appearance with the maimed Masters...
Linden find me. Beware of love.
Two qotes taht continue to bother me in light of the appearance of TC and Jeremiah. If J is still in the clutches of Foul, why was it necessary (and how) did TC take this J away from Foul, supposedly in a different time...? And why were they riding?... where had they come from? why couldn't TC just make them 'appear' at Revelstone?... It's all to messed up (partially because I don't yet understand the logic behind this interpretation of Time). I honestly don't think this is the 'real' image of TC and J... If they were forced images/essences of Foul's doing, taht would explain why the Demondim didn't unleash their full forse ... Foul instructed them to let them go ... to allow his two tools in to meet with Linden and make the most powerful weapon do his bidding through despair...
Yep. the appearance of TC and J is all bad news to me... But I am suspicious that way... Foul has guided her every step of the way to this moment. read book 1 again....
“What transpires? Anele sees no one. Only Masters, who have promised his freedom. Is aught amiss?”
huh?... Anele cannot see TC and J?... am I reading this correctly? If so .....
Hmmmmm
And I can't WAIT for the next chapter when Linden speaks with the Mahdoubt!!!!![/spoiler]

Gah. Another preview chapter posted in a month? Crazy.
Although I have to say, it's kind of nice that SRD is posting a half a chapter every month, since that's right around my reading speed.-jay

Quite good, although someone should have told Linden to shut the **** up and listen to TC.
I hope the story doesnt get too sci-fi though - two realities, multiple copies of people etc. I dont want anymore of it.
I doubt i'll read the second chapter, i want to enjoy the book when it comes out.
