I thought it made perfect sense in TWL too. The location made sense (along the path Foul's army took in TIW). And even if there was no larger purpose for the scenes at Stonemight Woodhelven, it helped to show how far the people of the Land had fallen, how they could not recognize evil, how desperate they had become under the Sunbane and Clave. And it served to use up Vain's one command ;-)

It does seem a bit odd here in Runes, but he's already introduced so many terrible new things - Falls, Dirt, skurj, etc - that pulling out some random new bane might've seemed awkward too ("they wield the Glaive of Affliction!" ;-) ). And likely there's some larger reasoning that we don't see yet for drawing it's power from the past.

Although I agree, I don't understand how they're doing it.
