I agree about "Time's Up". I really disliked what I heard of it.

Like I said, 3 good songs on Time's Up: Fight the Fight, This is the Life, and the title track. There are some good parts in the other songs, but lots of filler. (I do sometimes listen to Elvis is Dead, but I won't listen to it around others. )

I think Justice For All was Metallica's best. Heavy and dense. The pinnacle of their "metal" years.

Trapper, I love 5150, both the song and the album. Yes, I'm the One is awesome. But the very best of VH was 1984. Classic songs. I even liked the ones that weren't hits, like Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain.

Soundgarden is one of my all-time favorites. I love every album they did, and I even dig Cornell's solo stuff. His work with Audio Slave was okay. Shame what's happened to his voice.

I really liked Appetite for Destruction, and a couple songs off Use Your Illusion. Even the little EP they did with the slow version of "You're F*ckin Crazy" was decent. But yeah, they're sloppy as hell, and sucked in concert. Ditto Black Crows.

As non-hard as it is, I think "I'll Wait" is one of the better VH songs. "5150" (the song) utterly kicks ass. "Me Wise Magic" is, I believe, the absolute pinnacle of Eddie's playing.

Okay, I'm feeling stupid. Me Wise Magic? I thought I'd heard every VH song. Is that one of the "new" ones they did with Dave?

[Edit: ok, Youtube to the rescue. I remember that one. Good tune, good playing.]

Yeah, that was off the first greatest hits album. Awesome playing.

Malik, I may have to get "Time's Up" out for the first time in years. "Fight the Fight" was a good song. I seem to remember really liking one of the last tracks as well, something bass-heavy but mellow, might have been called "Ology" or something similar... But there was a lot of rubbish on it, too.

I agree with what you were saying about 1984, the sheer friggin' confidence of that album is unbelievable. I love the bridge-section of "Panama" where it slows down and Eddie's mixing some slow searing stuff with harmonics.

I missed the best of Metallica, the only album of theirs I ever bought was the eponymous one and I didn't backtrack, but I was told by pretty much every fan I knew that "And Justice for All" was their best work.

Loved Soundgarden's "Jesus Christ Pose" and one other track the name of which I can't recall right now.

My only real experience of Audioslave was when they were featured on Rage one night (Rage is a TV show on ABC TV (our public broadcaster) that goes from about 10:30pm to 7am every Friday and Saturday night). Three or four hours of them, and I loved every second. Tom Morello is amazing (I never really got the fuss about his work with Rage Against the Machine). Never heard any of Chris Cornell's solo stuff.

I liked Gn'R some, but not as much as my mates. I absolutely loved "Double Talkin' Jive" off UYI, though. That was Izzy Stradlin's work IIRC.

I'm off to Youtube to listen to "Me Wise Magic". I'd never heard of it either. Thanks for the heads-up, Cail.

nb I've overused the word "love" in this post, but that's what it's like with music, eh?

Oh, and Led Zep's "Achilles Last Stand" and the bit where "Dazed and Confused" speeds up and goes mental. Magic.

I haven't included any Zeppelin because, quite frankly, they're in their own category.
