Menolly, at this point a good ol' 56K modem would be more reliable than my cable connection. I suspect a Windows reinstall is in my immediate future. As to whether or not that will actually solve anything, who the heck knows.
I haven't quite lost my wits yet, but I'm starting to repeat the mantra of this thread myself...

Haha, I have to do a re-install too. My windows is insisting that my dvd-writer is a cd-drive. I can see the contents of dvd's, I just can't play the damn things. And I've tried everything. Almost.
This weekend, I'm replacing my IDE cable as a last resort, then, if that doesn't work, back-up and format. *sigh*

Oh man, I am so sorry you guys.
Of course, I'll be going through the 26.5K connection blues again on Wednesday and Thursday when we return to FIL's to bring Beorn back home next week...

Just curious if you've removed the driver and tried reinstalling that. Probably have, but y'never know.
I've had that problem before, and I don't remember how I solved it. I think I played around with drivers until one of them worked.

!!!!!
I shut down the laptop last night and restarted this morning. All of a sudden, I have a "Free Public WiFi" wireless connection showing up. But, it is security enabled and requires a Network Key.
I know nothing about this. I do know Gator Town provides free wireless in it's downtown area, and I am only about a mile and a half away from there, but I have never used it and did not know a network key was required.
Does anyone have any idea who I should contact to see if I can get access?

Yep. Reinstalled the IDE drivers of course. 1st thing I tried in fact. The drive itself doesn't have drivers...it's just an optical drive. Anyway, I fixed it. By re-installing my damn windows this weekend. And this is a new machine...I only just installed everything on it, now I have to do it all again.
Still, that's the beauty of windows, when all else fails, reinstall.

Well, I did it. No, not
that. I mean I finally re-installed Windows XP (on my home machine). Technically, it was a new install, as it's a custom version of XP I'm playing with. Sygate Personal Firewall came with the installation, and I have to say, I like it a lot. Sygate seems more sophisticated than Zonealarm, which I previously used.
My cable modem seems fine, which is a relief. The culprit for my connection calamity was in the software, not the hardware.
Nice to be back on the fast lane.

I am back at FIL's for another 24 hours. Back to the s-l-o-w 26.4K connection...

Of course, it begs the question:
Which is better? A reliable dial-up connection or an unreliable broadband connection?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!
I use AOL's browser for Menolly...
Eh?!? Oh HELL!!!!!! That browser is a heavily customised version of IE. Therefore, it's susceptible to the same old viruses, spyware, trojans, etc. that IE is susceptible to.
I'm on a forum where someone uses a signature image that's twice as big (in terms of KB) as that in Cagliostro's signature ..... it absolutely cripples folk on dial-up and she refuses to change it

I canna answer, as I use dial-up both at FIL's and here at home. But, at least I am now home with my slightly faster 56K connection, compared to the 26.5K connection at FIL's...
If I can figure out how to access this "Free Public WiFi" that is showing up on the laptop, I am pretty sure we will keep the AOL dial-up as is, just in case the WiFi system goes down. Which I hear from others can happen fairly often.

I love it, too! 56K Powaa - freakin' fabulous!

Yes, ma'am, I remember the days when 56K ruled.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a good dialup connection! I'm just addicted to broadband, that's all.
