amanibhavam - that's great news!

Cail - I got a chance to give "About Face" another spin today. I totally forgot about that outtro to "Murder". That was great! I also really like "Blue Light". Yeah, the rhythm part is (very) reminiscent of "Run Like Hell" but he does something totally different with it. And those horns! The 80s production really doesn't phase me at all, and I find that I'm much more impressed with this than the last time I heard it. Thanks for inspiring my reassesment!

I really like the first Gilmour solo album. There's No Way Out of Here is excellent. I find it much better than About Face, mostly due to that album sounding very 80's production wise.

The only song on "About Face" I don't care for as much as the others is "Love On the Air", but I blame Pete Townsend for that.

Otherwise, I think it's about perfect.

I'll have to give the first album another listen, but I remember being relatively ambivalent about it.

The Wall was a bit of a revelation to me. Yeah I had gotten down with the Beatles studio magic, Dylan's lyrical mastery, and the Petty/Springsteen double-barrel sincerity...but The WALL was different in so many compelling ways....the totured march of the guitar in The Thin Ice" as Pink slides towards his confrontation with his sanity...is chilling.

Roger Waters is brilliant here too! Only in Radio KAOS does he equal his brilliance here.

I've never really read interviews, nor have seen any documentaries, regarding the making of The Wall, so I'm curious. For both Dark Side and The Wall, did Waters draw upon his friendship with Syd for inspiration?

Dark Side yes, The Wall, sort of.

The wall had a great deal to do with his father, and the alienation he felt from the audience that manifested itself during the Animals tour.

I really need to get "About Face"; I think I'm in Cail's camp on this, due in no small part to Pino Palladino playing his amazing fretless on it (which we get to thank Pete Townsend for).

Paul Young? The Brit who had some really lame american releases? Gawd, as much as I don't like Cliff Richard...I like Paul Young even less.

Don't know about Dark Side,
but I do know that The Wall and The Final Cut
were inspired by Roger's father who fought in WW2.
(This was talked about in a radio interview back in the early 90s, which I have a cassette recording of.)

parts of the Wall have to do with Syd. parts with Roger's dad. and some parts with Roger. (the man answering the phone at home when pinks on tour. the two hands like balloons.) at least one part had to do with Rick (silver spoon on a chain, a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains) and some find it interesting that Dave sings the mother parts on Mother.

Yes, but he was (is) also a high demand studio guy. He did Townsend's "White City", and when Gilmour went in the studio to do 'About Face', Townsend referred Pino to him.

Ahhh, and Gilmour played on "White City" as well. But I believe "About Face" predates "White City" by about a year.

So maybe Pete owes Dave a thanks....

I agree. Actually "Mother" is one of my favorites vocally from both Gilmour and Waters. The contrast between Water's more strained style of singing and Gilmour's more airy style does great things for the song.

Yup, it's that counterpoint that adds so much to the song. Same thing in "Comfortably Numb", both with the singing and with the two solos.

Look, you can't expect me to know every damn thing! I read an article about Pino a few months back, and probably got that detail wrong.
