In thinking about all the stalwart actors that might line up for Nick's part, I imagined the agent of Mr. Bigstar describing the character of Nick, and how that revenge thing works out for him.
Agent: Now, remember the woman who scarred him?
Bigstar: Yeah, Sorus Chattel-something.
Agent: Right. Nick, all alone, no ship, attacks her ship in an asteroid swarm, destroys her biggest weapon, sneaks on board and in the climactic moment of the sequence, storms the bridge and has her at gunpoint.
Bigstar: Wow. That's sounds incredible! What does he do when he takes over the ship?
Agent: Oh, sorry. Sorus distracts him and shoots him, beats him anyway.
Bigstar: What? He loses? He doesn't get revenge? Who wrote this?
Agent: It's still a great part. I think you should read it before you decide. *hands him 4 books*
Bigstar: I thought there were 5 books.
Agent: There are. Nick isn't in the last one.

Yeah, but what a way to go out! Of all the characters, I think Nick has Oscar-worthy written all over him if you get the right actor. Sure, Morn does a lot of suffering and overcomes it and all, and Angus' angst would be good, and Davies adrenaline-junkie thing would be fun to play, but for pure scenery-chewing I'd take Nick in a heartbeat.ItisWritten wrote:In thinking about all the stalwart actors that might line up for Nick's part, I imagined the agent of Mr. Bigstar describing the character of Nick, and how that revenge thing works out for him.

I agree. He's a fun guy to play, but I wouldn't want to be him.CT wrote:Yeah, but what a way to go out! There's a lot of meat for a willing actor to chew into, and there won't be a shortage of quality actors eager for it. I'm just worried that casting a big name will cause Nick to somehow survive to the end.

Actually, I thought that was something that was so brilliant in the book. You have the main 3 characters. One of them gets offed in the next to last book. I wasn't expecting that AT ALL. Still, we are talking about the movies, so y'know...

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life

To put it another way, I've never seen a movie he was in and be able to forget that I was watching Tom Cruise.CovenantJr wrote:Cruise does have a similar arrogant charm to Nick, but I don't think I've seen him in anything where I've been seeing the character rather than Tom Cruise. If that makes any sense...
Besides, he's too short. Really.

Precisely. I don't want to be watching Forbidden Knowledge and find myself wondering what the appeal of Scientology is.ItisWritten wrote:To put it another way, I've never seen a movie he was in and be able to forget that I was watching Tom Cruise.CovenantJr wrote:Cruise does have a similar arrogant charm to Nick, but I don't think I've seen him in anything where I've been seeing the character rather than Tom Cruise. I like movies that cast against type (like Interview). Hugh Jackman could also be interesting. I think The Fountain proves he has the chops to play just about anything. It would be perfect to cast a typical "hero" in the role of Nick, (and a villian in the role of Angus) adding a whole extra layer to the role switching that happens. (Think Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, one of the most perfect casting choices I can imagine)

It's a pity John Malkovich is too old...he'd have been great as Nick.
So...of course I'm still going for Josh Holloway!!! He's got the grin, the grimace, the drawl, the whole package...and yes, the RANGE necessary. Just needs a haircut!
