Are you referring to
Boyd?
That one blew my mind last week.
For that matter, so did Saunders killing Topher's girl
.
Pretty much assuring me that I'll have to go back and watch season 1 again. Haven't seen last night's ep yet.

Just finished up season 1. Episode 13 was not what I expected.

Firefly was quite bold and ambitious, and Dollhouse is downright visionary. Money people don't sign on for vision, or for thickly layered complexity that unfolds over the course of years. They sign on for accessibility and gimmicks. Buffy developed depth later, but started off simple. Firefly might have made it, but Dollhouse was doomed from the outset.
You've hit the nail here, certainly on Dollhouse.
It's frustrating watching this show, knowing that a 3-4 season arc was crammed into half a season. IMO, the characters on this show truly suffered from the plot-driven need to finish the main arc.
For instance,
Boyd's screwy family ideas
probably would have made more sense to me if they could have been fleshed out as Whedon intended. Not saying I didn't understand, but the whole thing was just jarring.

I'm just starting season 2, but my gods the last (unaired?) episode of season 1 was just amazing. I can't wait for part 2 of the future episodes.
I have to admit my love for Olivia Williams as well.

Ok, I just finished Dollhouse, and I have to say - what a series. It began so slow to my tastes, starting as a problem of the week, but evolving into sooooooooo much more. It's just a pity the first half of both seasons were as dull as they were, but what a payoff at the end of both seasons.
Topher aside, I have to say the one I was most impressed with was the guy who played Victor was amazing, and quite a surprise. Those moments on the show when he plays Topher were just amazing, moving beyond just impression - he just nailed the part.
