I was annoyed at her at times. The whole confessionals she went through with Covenant in the second chronicles (telling him about her 'crimes' against her father and mother) rang false to me. I don't like Freud and I don't want his couch batting its ugly head into my story.
Also in contrast to Covenant, Linden, coming as she does from a neglecting family, lacks confidence in herself and that lack is felt in the story. She has to fight herself to act.
But I must say the things Donaldson did with her in FR and the RotE prologue put me in awe.

Linden is vastly annoying when she's doing nothing but molding the rock she sits on for hours on end to shape her butt cheeks; screwing up the rock so badly that not even Anele could read it.
And when she's not harming rocks by endless sitting down and inaction; she manages to pretty much screw up everything she could screw up. Honestly; by the end of the Chronicles Lord Foul isn't going to be the Despiser anymore (we all knew he had to come to an end), however I find it vexing that the only reason is because he feels unworthy of the title and resigns to let Linden take his badge, Illearth Stone, and the keys to Linden's Creche.

Linden's most serious crime is that she is dull. Sadly we the readers are punished ... bring back grumpy, ambiguous and darkly amusing TC ffs SRD !!

Got to agree here, reading Linden feels much like what I imagine a beheading with a dull blunt sword is like. At least if she were less dull, our suffering would be over faster.

Couldn't agree less. What is wrong with you THOOLAH people? It's like you have no literary taste. You'd rather SRD write a character that has no faults, that does exactly what they're supposed to do? You don't want a character that had dimensions and makes you FEEL? A boring character that acts like a robot? Talk about dull!
Give me a break guys and quit complaining about Linden so much. It's getting old.

We didn't say we liked her dull, just the opposite in fact. Yes, we'd like a character with faults, that doesn't do everything right all the time, that does makes us feel.
Sadly Linden doesn't make us feel, or rather she doesn't make us feel good reading her. Just because a character fits all the criteria you stated, doesn't make them likeable, or enjoyable to read.
Tell you what... Although I've never been accepted into thoolah, I think I can speak on behalf of everyone there... I'll make you a deal, Linden stops being an arrogant, nonloving but obsessive "mom", complaining, ruthless, disregarding everyone for her own feelings, power seeking bitch, and I and thoolah will cease complaining.
Thoolah, this is fair, no?

After a quick, informal and unrecorded vote, Revan has been inducted into THOOLAH.

Of all the groups of people and friends I have had over the years; I have never felt so in sync with the people around me than when I am surrounded by people who hate Linden Avery.

What, and TC
does make you feel good reading him? Yet so many people put down LFB because of that arrogant, heartless bastard.

The very things you cite are the reasons Linden's feelings are so powerful. You'll have to admit that SRD's writing is at its best when he's taking you through intense emotions, and Linden is going through a hell of a ride right now.

Yes he does, he makes it a very enjoyable experience reading him. Covenant is an amazing and controversal character to read. His action in Lord Foul's Bane make him even more of a challenge.
And one beef I have with Linden is *her* utter selfishness. And it grates many times more than it would usually when comparing it to Covenant's unselfish behaviour. A demonstration is the giants, In the Second Chronicles Thomas tries to spare them many times, ordering them to take his friends and themselves out of Sarangrave Flat. Trying to get them to stay behind in the battle for Revelstone, etc... He made loads of efforts to spare those around him. What does Linden do when represented with a similar chance to spare those around them? Uses them, she tells the giants in FR, "the way I see it, it makes you responsible for me". And two giants die later as a result of it. She cares nothing for those around her, and would sacrifice any number for her selfish desires, whereas Thomas did his best to protect any number of people for his selfless ones.
As a pre-emptive to any who'll say many people died because of Thomas in the FC, that argument is mute. He didn't try and take on responsibility, and avoided even then people trying to sacrifice themselves for him.

Linden's feelings are powerful, and SRD's writing in FR is simply sublime. However neither of these things have to make for an interesting likeable character.
And you've hit the nail right on the head! *Linden* is going through a hell of a ride, ***Linden*** I don't *want* Linden. *WE* don't want Linden. My dislike of Linden is increased exponentially by the fact I miss Thomas Covenant, that I compare her bad attributes with Thomas' virtues. [/quote]

*wan smile* I knew it wouldn't, just my odd humor coming out danlo.
Nonetheless my points regarding Linden stand forever firm.
