Well the top grossing films of 2007 certainly don't seem to be among the films that have been discussed so far although a couple are in the top 10.
My favorite (that I actually saw -- still waiting to see Bourne and Die Hard) is The Simpsons Movie.

I'm skeptical of Sweeney Todd--mainly because Tim Burton's been hit or miss lately (Sleepy Hollow and Big Fish were great, but I could've lived without Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). I also find the template predictable: the film has to be dark, Gothic, and starring Johnny Depp (plus Helena Bonham Carter, another Burton regular).

On the plus side, the first five reviews have been glowing, but there's 100+ more to go.

Yeah, I was a little bit disappointed about Helena Bonham Carter. However, I've come to expect her in Tim Burton films, as she is married to the man.

Yep. Her rendition of Bellatrix LeStrange (nee Black) makes Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix rank as Pornography.

Hawt. Like, solar corona hawt.

I could go on, but it'd be a bit graphic.

I wonder if we dyed her hair blonde if she could pull off Linden.

Mr. Brooks is the best movie I've seen this year.

Anyone else love "The Namesake"?

I just saw 3:10 to Yuma, and I think it's easily the best film I've seen all year. I can't remember ever seeing a western I liked more. (Well... maybe Fistfull of Dollers, but I enjoyed that movie the way I enjoyed 300) It's also the only film of the year to jerk a few tears out of me. (It's rare, but it happens) There are also some *great* cameos by some surprising actors. (And Alan Tudyk is awesome in anything. You may know him as Wash from Firefly). I think Crowe honestly might have given the performence of his career (hard as it is to top LA Confidential) and Bale definately gives his best. He might have given the man with no name a run for his money!

(sorry to double post...) I have heard that he plans on making the Gore like Kill Bill. I am already a huge Sondheim fan, unfortunately I live in a good (small) theater town that never sees big plays. (I already have tickets to sweeney the next time it comes to town!) There are some projects that I just can't imagine anyone but Burton doing, and this is one of them. (I would also LOVE to see him do a new Wizard of Oz based off of the book, it's my wet dream). Burton does seem to be hit or miss, but he's got more Hits (for me) than most directors that's for sure. Ed Wood is one of my absolute favorite movies period.

I actually knew a guy, nicest guy you will ever meet, completely harmless and cheery. (To the point that he can't like a song built on minor chords, 'cause they are too sad, hence he hates Radiohead ) But Sweeney was his absolute favorite musical. (Into the Woods, another Sondheim, is mine)

I was something of a theater geek in high school. Cmon! I went to an all boys school and this was the one Co-ed activity! That and speech/debate. Then again we were the ones smoking pot in the parking lot at the meets...(We mostly did the improv events )

Shoot 'em Up was extremely entertaining. Live Free or Die Hard as well. Darjeeling Limited was good, but I'd probably go with No Country for Old Men above all.

Anyway, out of all the extremely overrated movies this year, 300 is probably the worst. Visually exciting, but a horror to listen to. Dialogue was horrendous.

Cmon, 300 was a lot of fun. It wasn't about dialogue, it was about watching some greased up half naked greeks murder tens of thousands of Persians, an ambition it fulfilled admirably.

It was no where near as bad as I thought it would be, from a Classics perspective.

Was Stardust this year? I think it was. That's the most enjoyable film I can think of that I've seen this year.

Unless Reign On Me was this year, which I think it was. I didn't expect Adam Sandler to be this good of actor.

I guess you didn't see Punch Drunk Love! (A great movie! Maybe my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movie!)

Unfortunately for everyone, The Man Who Fell to Earth wins Best Movie EVERY YEAR.

As of right now, the Darjeeling Ltd is ranking number one. No Country For Geezers...Old Men (Dagon! ) is a close second. However, I Am Legend comes out on Thursday night, and I really think it's going to take number one for me.
