That was good, of course, but I gotta say the smoke ring trumps it.

My #1 pick would have to be Boromir's death in FotR. Every THUNK! of the arrows into Boromir's chest was devastating.

danlo also mentioned another all-time favorite, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. Not only a great final death scene, but one of the greatest movie endings ever.

Boromir's was the more visceral death scene, but Batty's death affected me just as much in its own way. It's a more "poetic" death I guess.

...and the second death of HAL in 2010 is great, too. And it's a far "nobler" kind of death. He truly went out with a bang. (Oops, did I spoil the movie? Heh.)

Okay, even though I hate Alien 3, I have to admit that Ripley's immolation was a great moment.

I also thought Neo's death in Matrix Revolutions was a good one, even if many felt that the movie itself was DOA. (I also hated the film at first.)

Never seen that one, but my wife watches bad movies on SciFi because they are. She does draw the line, but I couldn't tell you where that is.

Hehe, I kinda wanna see "Mansquito". Sounds JUST like the movies they lampoon on Mystery Science Theater 3000. (One of my favorite shows ever)

Hmm...it's a shame I don't remember names of characters in film, but here we go:

-Romero's Day of the Dead, towards the end where the guy gets his head torn off by zombies. Proof that CGI is not needed for an awesome head ripping off scene.
-Same movie, but with the over-acting commander's legs getting torn off and his last words being, "Choke on it...choke on it...."
-Romero's Dawn of the Dead, when the blonde character succumbs to the zombie bite and his friend needs to shoot him in the head. A very touching scene...
-Zombie 2 (are we seeing a theme, yet?)- when that one chick is dragged through a door by a zombie and her eye gets impaled by a piece of wood in the process.
-Romero's Night of the Living Dead:

Also, when Barbara gets it has always been haunting to me...

And now for some non-zombie films:
Sunshine: When the captain stays behind to fix the shielding and accepts his fate with dignity.
Same movie: Where the engineer is trying to fix the mainframe and is constantly emerging himself in the coolant to do so, but gets his leg caught and crushed in the process.
Gran Torino: "Anyone got a light? Well, I got a light..."
Predator: All the deaths were awesome.
Hang 'Em High: The scene where the young men are hanged is very moving.
High Plains Drifter: Any scene involving a whip killing a guy... (*shiver*)

That's all I can think of right now...

Day of the Dead has to have one of the greatest film climaxes ever, from the moment the zombie horde pours over the loading platform to the death of the Captain.

Zombie 2, like most Fulci movies has a mix of superb gore, and really lame deaths. The one you mention is just gold, though.

The death you're referring to is of the biker/bounty hunter Leonard Smalls, who was played by Randall 'Tex' Cobb, not John Goodman. I do agree the scene was priceless, though!
