That was a major problem with Diary. In Night, Dawn, and Day, Romero never had his characters so explicitly state the film's themes - in Diary, they never shut-up about it. I quite like the Savini remake too. I still think the original is the better of the two, though Savini's version does have some excellent strengths. I agree about Tony Todd. He was fantastic as Ben. The remake of Dawn of the Dead is still the best remake of a Romero film, I think.
