Fantastic accumulation and display of the Vile file there wayfriend..Excellent work.
For me,, the important is in the the acknowledgment that the Vile are purposeless but only unto themselves...This is key in perceiving the Surreal, understanding the surreal perspective and perhaps , key to perceiving the surreal of SRD as expressed in the Last Chrons.
The idea that , the individual, is the center , from which all life and living starts from.. not society, religions, governments et al,,is fundamental to grasp..Therefore,,ones purpose is to know or find out..Who Am I?..The assembly or discovery of Who Am I..for the Original Surrealists, was or is to be free of the restrictive influences of society,,religous dogma, government dictates,,etc etc...That freedom ,,allows for the discovery of magnificent things of beauty.
The mystery of the Viles makes sense in the context of..In answering the question,,Who Am I?..the Original Surrealists suggested the answer is in ones Imagination. It was put forth that the Imagination is limitless, unbounded,,infinite. Answers just wait to be discovered there. Not all answers found are kept. Only which resonates, adheres over time,,becomes part of the answer to Who Am I...So,,the unknown,, the Mystery,,mystery itself,,is at very core of defining Who Am I.
All things negative,,Ravers, despite, despair,, etc etc..act as negations to the Imagination,,act as barriers or weights, anchors,,to the unfettered, free exploration of ones Imagination where magnificent castles are made. In other words,, lifes dailey struggles ,,dealing, inter acting,,with the full spectrum of people and their Lifes..is a constant challenge to discovery of Who Am I. The Lords of the past are clearly shown to have failed largely in overcoming that Challenge. As said above..Not all answers found in the Unknown Imagination..,,are kept,, adhere over Time. Linden's return to past and bending of it, suggests a letting go,, of some of the " answers" found long ago...Again,, SRD is a bit older now than he was when he started Lord Fouls Bane....
Over all..The Viles,,as an appellation assigned to the makers of magnificent castles and things of beauty is ironic. The original surrealists had a " thing " about Dark Humor,,or what they called Black Humor...It has to do with ,,things tragic and things beautiful having the same value,,That is to say.. both have and may be required, to push, inspire, one into the Imagination, the Surreal Plane. Also,, the Original Surrealists,, and those all the way to today,,who put forth the Surreal perspective,,had been and continue to be..reviled by just about every one of the established institutes of man made living. Free thinking and Imagination exploring individuals scare the hell out of Institutional oriented Lifes, for they need strict adherence to their dogma, in order to survive and justify their existence. SRD sense of dark humor, Irony, is keen.
As stated in another thread,,I hope for a return or rediscovery of the Viles Caverns by end of Last Chrons...Yes,, SRD doesn't bring these types of characters without a future in mind. I asked him about that in the General Inquisition..I got an email from him stating that I was certainly aware of the spoiler nature of my inquiry, but was much appreciated for the asking.
