Well, sorry guys, but I am glad SRD sees the error of the ways of his youth. It is probably the ONLY word in the series that I actually HATE. Mainly because I try to pronounce things in my head. (do you know how many times I that word comes up in TOT?) But also because of this:

My husband: I think it's supposed to have that messed-up-ness.

Note that I made this entire post w/out typing that word out. You know why, folks? If I did, I would probably break out in sores or at least a cold sweat. If something absolutely necessitated its repetition, at least there's copy-paste.

(Okay, so maybe that last bit is just "it's late and I'm carrying things a bit too far!")

Heh, I like that word too. But I almost never try to figure out how these words are pronounced. I guess that gives me one less reason to have an issue with them.

I'm pretty sure you guys are spelling it wrong, anyway. I think it's easy as hell to pronounce when you spell it right.

It's spelled right. Just looked it up in TOT: Elemesnedene. I guess it's kind of scary that I didn't look it up at all the first time I typed it. That word has always stuck in my head. That and Bhrathairealm. There's just something about those italic names... and most of the names in TOT.

And yes, I also see Elemesnedene as "misshapen and chaotic" when you look at it's constituent parts. It's truly the epitome of a crazy SRD word.

I love SRD's names. I especially loved the look on his face when Julie asked him why he would name a charactor Soranal pronounced Sore Anal. That was a priceless moment in FBH history.

In the German translation some of the names are translated as well.. its quite ok for the giants and i am glad that the Haruchai and Ranyhyns names are the same as in the OV..but Drool e.g. is tranlated as "seibrich"

well then..

I usually seibrich after too many German beers.

I pronounce it Elohome. Seriously, it's pretty easy to say.

I don't care if he named the Ravers Huey, Louie, and Dewey. It's the story that counts, and I'd not think any differently of the outcome if he did. All hail SRD. And I am dying to know his reaction to the Soranal question. I always pronounced it (in my head) Sore-uh-NAL, emphasis on last syllable, short A sound. Julie, you are brave.........

hmmm ive always said it Elemnesdine. probably because my first reading was at 14 and it sounded right at the time.. oh well..since SRD hates it i guess i will keep my pronunciation for this one too.

I LOVE the names. Everything about them adds to the mystery and charm of the land for me.

Haruchai and Ranyhyn are probably two of my favourite words. Ever.

I started Runes- bought on my brief sojourn in America last week- and already wondering where SRD comes up with "Sam Diadem".

THe only name, I didn't like, was Kelenbranbanal (sp?)...I know..I know..it kind of soaunds like horses whinnying...which is cool...but its such a hard word to pronounce..it always slows me down when I'm reading.

Anyway, back on topic...

Actually, as much as I like the names in the TC series, I also really dig the names in the GAP series. Yeah, I know there's arguably not as much "mythology" that goes into it as in TCoTC. (Although he does bring in various aspects of Norse mythology in different names.)
But I LOVE the fact that the very first thing he came up with for the series was the names (Angus Thermopyle, Morn Hyland, Nick Succorso), and that the story evolved afterward. I always thought that was kinda cool.
