Snatch. I don't care if you think it's top-tier because of who's in it; no way did I expect that film to be the awesome flick it is. And Cail, I totally disagree with you about Mystery Men......

Sneakers was great :)

And despite being directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Dennis Quaid, I would nominate InnerSpace. Not to mention The Great Escape, which almost didn't get made (one producer, after hearing the pitch for the movie, asked, "What's so great about an escape where only four people get away?").

actualy if I'm not mistaken, it wasn't directed by SS, only produced. I think it was Joe Dante.

Innerspace was great, as was Dreamscape and Brainstorm.

Or two threads. One for movies from ~2000 and before. The other for the less than spectacular ones of the last several years.

I'd also like to add SLC Punk at the top of my list.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

These films are getting rarer and rarer though. It seems that we're almost at a dichotomy between "quirky" indie films and wannabe blockbusters.

So we are including big name stars in little movies? If so, then I want to add 2 of my Big Little movies: "Groundhogs Day" and "Defending your Life", both of which really explore the meaning of life and love.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

That was actually a decent movie.

Hell yes it was, and it has more quotable lines in it since Monty Python's The Holy Grail.

May be a little to low for the list, and foreign, but the best movie I saw last year was a Czech film called Kontrol. Absolutely fantasic. Find it if you can.
