I find carved pumpkins don't really display all that well in lit areas, so unless you plan to have a darkened area to display the pumpkin, I suggest painting a decoration on the outside and leaving it whole.

Roasted pumpkin seeds are the best! Here's our pumpkin:

My husband carved it freehand, but he's an artist like that. We gutted it, carved it and then painted it red. I've seen some really cute pumpkins using only paint. And the obligatory puking pumpkin is always good for a laugh.

I'm a big fan of using road flares in a pumpkin.
It lasts for about 5 minutes but it gives off an intense light and supplies its own smoke.
Guaranteed to make at least 1 out of 5 people who see it say: "f#cking awesome!!!!"

Chrys, you should still set the rotting/rotten pumpkin out on your doorstep Halloween night!

and if anyone asks, just tell them, "Well that's what they do in America."

Cool hockey pumpkin! I think you need to make a few like that :D

Alas our first attempt was bannished from work...so I plan to get another on Friday and redo it for the weekend. Hopefully I will get the chance to do it as I have a ton of paperwork that needs to be finished as well.

Good luck with your pumpkin, Chrys! I've never carved one myself, so I have no advice.

JazFusion, your pumpkin looks fantastic! And if I ever try my hand at this sort of thing, I'd go for the puking pumpkin.

HLT's road flare pumpkin sounds pretty cool, too.
