On behalf of my fellow early-50s Watchers, let me add to the chorus...

Drew, at least we respect you more than the tripe Brooks writes. Might not be a bad idea to return the favor.

Obligatory SoS mention: A woman I was dating gave me the book. She knew I was a reader and had enjoyed the book, but had never read LOTR. She did not particularly appreciate my mockery of the book, but still ended up marrying me.

Just finished re-reading Shannara myself (again, many years since I last read it). It really is so lame when compared to SD and Tolkien. Lightweight, no real substance or depth, Tolkien ripoff. I may be contradicting myself but I found them an easy read. By the way, tried reading Robert Jordans Wheel of Time. Gave up after after several million pages. Far too detailed, too many characters. Good concept though. Just could not stay interested enough to slog my way through. And there are 12 books!!!! I think SD and Tolkien will always be the standard by which I measure fantasy books.
By the way Luci, I know what it feels like to be 51 and reading books published when I was a kid! :(
