I'm not sure that you can say that women had no real power in the Land. Sure Linden didn't fight Foul, but niether did TC, he let Foul kill him and accepted all the violence the despiser could throw.
We had two female High Lords (Osondrea and Elena),
four female Lords (Tamarantha, Shetra, Loerya and Amatin),
a female on Stowndown Circle of Elders (Terass),
and two female Heers at Soaring Woodhelven (Llaura and Omournil?), female soldiers (Irin and others nameless),
a female First Haft and later Hiltmark (Amorine),
two female Staff Elders (Tamarantha and Asuraka),
a female Graveller (at Stonemight Woodhelven),
a female eh-Brand (Hollian),
a female Appointed (who became the Colossus of the Fall),
a female leader of the Elohim (Infelice),
a female swordmainnir (Gossamer Glowlimn),
two female manethralls (Lithe and Jain),
female na'Mhoram in (Memla, Akasri and others nameless),
a female Storemaster and later Anchormaster (Galewrath),
and at that point I run out of energy.
Admittedly there are no female Masters, Warmarks or Eldests, but I am sure Galewrath would eventually get promoted, as I think Amorine and Asuraka would have had they lived.
Also, like has been pointed out, when both members of a couple were Lords, the women often had some sort of pre-eminance. Shetra was chosen by the Ranyhyn, Tamarantha was the spokesperson, with Variol bearly speaking, and I always got the impression that Loerya was tougher than Trevor.
the one thing I do notice is that we never see a woman weilding lillianril or rhadhamaerl lore. No female gravellingasses, hirebrands or hearthralls. Not sure why, I just found it interesting.

You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.
In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.
He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.

She tells TC that even though her dad isn't a healer, he has shown her how to find hurtloam. That's about all though, I think.Landwaster wrote:Wasn't Lena somewhat able to cover for dad Trell with radhamaerl work on his behalf?

But females are generally more social, and males less so. Therefore women are less equiped to deal with being ostracised.Landwaster wrote:It would make more sense to use a male character for this, as males are more often than not in a position of head of family/business/etc ... so its a bigger drop for them to be ostracised and impotent etc.
Impotence would probably hit a guy hard, as long as was just impotence and not infetility.

So could Triok. Possibly all stowndowners could. I doubt it would be hugely difficult to learn. I was more talking about the hardcore stuff. I don't recall any women using lomilliolor or orcrest except for Asuraka and Amatin using the communication rods.Landwaster wrote:Really? I was sure that at some stage, she was able to get gravelling going ... perhaps in TPTP?

That's OK. Competition is a masculine value born out of a patriarchal value system, and I choose not to buy into it.

Missed this post ... the leprosy part of it definitely would be harder on social creatures, but in the Land, people loved being sociable, so they wouldn't have too much strife on that score.variol son wrote:But females are generally more social, and males less so. Does that mean you are on the nature side of the nature/nurture debate?Landwaster wrote:Don't agree with you on that point! Competition is the nurturer of striving!variol son wrote:That's OK. Competition is a masculine value born out of a patriarchal value system, and I choose not to buy into it.
