Dogs are way better than cats because I'm not allergic to dogs, but I am to cats :P - however, I like both...

dw has a good point about dogs loving us no matter what. Like Cail's sig: "One day I hope to be the man my dog thinks I am" - about sums it up!

I saved ali's post for future reference.
I don't hate dogs - they are handsome animals, but I dislike the sound of barking. I'm a quiet person, so I would only tolerate a quiet pet. That basically supersedes all other arguments.

<--- I feel I need to apologize to Karl Urban, whose image I've stolen for my av, just in case he is a dog lover. It's nothing personal, man.

As for cats supposedly not showing enough affection, that entirely depends on your personal notion of what is enough. I don't want or need a pet to smother me with love. I consider a cat's aloofness to be an asset. It can keep its distance as far as I'm concerned.

Really, my ideal pet might be fish, if not for the hassle of maintaining an aquarium.

If it's between dogs or kids...lorin, I'm sorry, but you're on your own on that question. I can't comprehend having either. (Especially after seeing those pics.)

I don't have any pets...can barely take care of myself, let alone some other living thing. That said, in principle, I prefer cats to dogs.

If I were to get a pet, it's probably be a Miss December.

MM, if you do decide to adopt a cat one of these days, look at the shelter for an older cat. Kittens tend to be kind of hyper. Altho almost all cats get what I've heard referred to as "the 9 o'clock crazies" -- in the evening they shoot off from a standing start and race all over the house, for no good reason.

Also, some cats are more vocal than others. The shelter people would know which ones never say a word. :)

I've often said that when Morgan has moved on (either with Magickmaker -- Morgan is really her cat -- or up to Kitty Heaven), if I get another cat, it'll be an older one. One that will sleep all day, and when I come home, it'll look up and say, "Oh, it's you. Let me know when dinner's ready," and then go back to sleep.

I like dogs and cats
especially in a stew
with carrots and onions.

MM, avoid siamese cats at all costs...... they have big mouths and are very hyper. Like Ali says, get an older pet, dog or cat. There are dog breeds that don't bark.

Thanks for the advice, lorin and ali!

Call me perverse, but that's almost exactly the kind of cat I'd want. Not that I'd mind a more active cat - it can go about doing its own thing (obviously short of wrecking the place). And I don't have a problem spending quality time cuddling a cat. I'm saying that's preferable to having a dog all over me. That's just a bit too much.

Don't worry, Siamese cats are not on my list of potential pets. No offense to Siamese owners, but these cats aren't attractive to me. If a cat's cuteness factor isn't high enough for me, then there is no point in having it. That may sound harsh, but I'm the one allowing it into my space, and footing the bill for its food and health needs. Which brings up Av's reality check: this is all hypothetical for me. Right now, I'm in no position financially to support a pet. If I'm ever going to own a pet, I'm going to do it right or not at all.

Wouldn't that be kind of a high maintenance pet?

Only if you keep it.
