Of course, money doesn't have to be made out of precious metal; any medium of exchange that is accepted qualifies as money, regardless of the material out of which the material is made. Years ago, I ran a pencil-and-paper AD&D game for a while and the monetary system I used incorporated "trade bars", nothing more than ingots of iron that were stamped in denominations. This made larger amounts of money easy to carry and had an actual historical basis. Just to give them a non-combat problem to solve the party, carrying these trade bars, went to a locale that didn't use that currency--they were broke!
The Tank is gone and now so am I.
