at the prison i only need to worry about RIF (reduction in force) that is when they take a non-security job and make it a security position.

they did it the coaches years ago and the substance abuse counselers a few years back. they brought the counselers back.

they offer you a job in security if you are qualified. that means shooting every year at inservice. which i do. i am qualified with the shotgun, ar-15 and .38.

with ten years in and qualified staus i would be ok if they take my job. i would likely grade out at the highest c/o position. (c/o 5)

but it would suck no longer being a sgt.

For what its worth...Boeing is building now a new facility in South Carolina. Their new 787 Airliner looks to be the major program there, either in sub components manufacturering or final assembly..a major investment going on their. Boeing is pulling out all the stops on landing the air tanker contract which is once again up for grabs with Aerobus in the hunt then out of the hunt then back in the hunt then..geesh..Pentagon screwed this up bad,but there is great pressure to get this contract. Wichita and Seattle area main benefactors. The Royal Family Saud,,of Saudi Arabia wants 70 some New and m the ost advanced F15's..a bunch of Apache Helicopters and a bunch of Scout helicopter ( A160I also Boeing)...St Louis area on the F15 and Mesa Az area ( Phoenix) on the helicopters. US Govt want 125 more F18s,,St Louis area major benefactor.

Now..all the subcontractors to Boeing in every politicians district is also a beneficiary of Boeings success. Thats how you get political pressure to win contracts and congressional approval for Foreign Military Sales. Every major Boeing facility has a medical staff. Every Boeing site has need for accountants, truck drivers, repairmen, secretaries, etc etc etc. Boeing,,being a government prime and sub contractor..has to meet government quotas...all sorts of quotas..Not only hiring quotas but doing business with quotas. Every one is supposed to benefit from the Pentagon's contracts..Boeing Seattle area is hiring now. Lots of folks already with in Boeing are looking at the South Carolina venture as the future....Also consider Lockheed/Martinetta..NorthrupGrumen..etc

I will tell you this..Top most management of Boeing has admitted that the " globalization" effort with the 787 Has Not Worked. Top Management has stated clearly that they aim to keep more work close to where the product is final assemblied.

Also..Government Contractors get "tax credits" for every Veteran hired.

Jaz, I really feel terrible you are going through what you are going through. Most of us would say "Just hang in there its all going to turn around for you, just survive and hang on."

Those are words of council that are caring and appropriate but in the end I'm sure all you want is for someone to give you a chance to support yourself and your family.

There's little any of us can really do except be here for you to express yourself. It helps. It doesn't fix anything but it always makes me feel better knowing someone out there gives a crap.

Absolutely. If I had a spare house or enough money to do more than just scrape by myself, I'd happily lob it your way, Jaz. It causes me some anguish to hear about your situation, and I really struggle to get my head around the panic and misery it must cause you.

But whatever you do, however bad things get, never consider yourself a failure. Never. I won't allow it.

The only thing I can offer to all of you who are suffering, short of the usual platitudes, is that I've been laid off several times in my life and no matter how bleak things looked for however long they looked bleak, I always, *always* got another job. Always. So, y'know, hang in there.

And Jaz, given the number of people who are in your situation right now, you cannot judge your success or failure based on the lack of jobs in your area. If nobody's hiring, it's not your fault that you're unemployed.

Exactly. I know I sound all doom and gloom here, but it's really just me venting my feelings. Our respective families (save my mother) have turned blind eyes to our situation. "Oh, I didn't realize you were in such a bad way...". And the last few times we've said we're broke meant nothing?!

I do appreciate people listening, and caring. Really, I do. Don't ever get the impression I'm not grateful. The overflowing of support from my friends, online and offline has been humbling. I've just personally become overwhelmed.

I've been in worse scrapes than this. When I first became pregnant, I was living alone and surviving on the packets of herbs and sodium that come with ramen noodles and water. Broth, basically. I couldn't even afford the actual ramen noodles. And as a kid, there were many months my mother couldn't afford meat. I've been poor. I'm still poor. I just wish to have enough money to live comfortably. I want to be self-sufficient. For myself, for my husband, for my son. It's just frustrating. And I can't even put it to words. And that's frustrating, too.

Thanks, Alan. Get on that house thing, though. My mother might not allow me to live in the UK, but I need a summer home that isn't the US.

Why don't we form a brain-storming tank that comes up with ideas that will create jobs? Businesses to start and stuff like that? Just a thought

Moving takes money, Vain. People who've been out of work for weeks on end don't have any.

That said, Americans historically have been willing to pull up stakes and move to where the jobs are. But there aren't many places in America right now where there are more jobs than people willing to take them. I can pretty much count them on no fingers, in fact. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. But Jaz is in New Hampshire, TOM and ____ are in Florida, and sindatur's in California; if you look at a US map, you can see that we're talking all corners of the country.

I do like your brainstorming idea, tho. I'm not much of an entrepreneur, but I think others are. And suggestions, like lurch's, for places to job-hunt would be awesome too.

I too appreciate the entrepreneurial idea of coming up with a business model that helps all of us on the Watch with our unemployment problem.
Shame we can't all contribute and write a best seller short story collection. We already have the raw materials in place from the Anthology however writing a best selling book is largely akin to winning the Lotto for the most part.

I was born and raised in Tampa Florida and I cannot call any other location on Earth home. However I would be willing to relocate if a job opportunity arose that would not only provide long term employment for myself but was lucrative enough to pay for the move and give my spouse time to find a replacement for her job.

I'm not desperate enough yet to consider taking a job in another state while leaving my family behind.

It's all so complicated and depressing. UGH!

Think about how big states are and how far apart they are. Flordia, one of the smaller states (by a long way) is bigger than my entire country. The sheer cost of moving all your worldly belongings across a continent has to be prohibitive.

There's another member here.....sorry i forget the name. His avatar was Bob the Builder. He does roof inspection all over the country. Said the money is good but you have to be willing to travel a lot and work hard. Up until last year he also said his business was recession proof (to a degree).
He posted about it recently trying to help anyone that needed help.

There is no Flordia. Florida is the 26th largest state, which puts it pretty much dead center, NOT smaller by a long way.

May I also suggest " Temp Agencies" they can be a foot in the door for a good place to work,,and serve you as to who you may Not want to work for. Something is better than nothing.

Right away, I started working under-the table...very easy to do in the Transportation industry.

I had planned to go obtain my Driving Instructors licence and teach Drivers Ed; but then a guy I used to work with (and for, for a short time) had to take six months off on disability, so I starting working for him...still under-the-table

Well, that six months has turned into over a year now, though he is back to work, and we work together now.

Just in case anyone from Revenue Canada lurks here, I won't mention that I haven't paid a cent of income tax in nearly eighteen months.

I'm actually shitting bricks about it!!! I want to keep working for this guy, but I don't know what I'll do about claiming my income...its not like I've been able to put anything away. And most driving jobs don't pay very well, the few that do are already taken!!

Well, with 24 larger states, it's quite a long way from being the biggest, isn't it? So while he may not have been completely correct, he wasn't strictly wrong either.

I was unemployed from Sept. 2007 to July 2009. Only managed 'cause my mother died the year before, and I'd inherited enough to keep going for a while.

When I did finally get a new job though, it was far and away the best I've ever had. Hope y'all find the same.

I was laid off in July 2010. Must say the company did it nicely. Usually it has been "You can go home now, and no need to come back." They gave us 60 days warning and a completion bonus worth over a month's pay. Been on unemployment ever since and have begun to get some freelance work doing banners, book trailers and web design. At my age getting regularly hired is a far-shot.

But I've several creative projects which will hopefully take off. THE ANNOTATED CARMILLA will hopefully see publication within a month or so. And I'm working with a team on creating a web series.

Hey I may decided to take up writing again!
