And yet, not all here do anything beyond joining. I live within 15 miles of one who has been here for four years, and has seven posts. Every time I see her online, I send off a quick pm. Just telling her to shut up and let others speak once in a while.

Indeed- I just had a look at the past few "newbie" topics. The pattern definitely seems to be:

Newbie says hello.
Watchers say hello back.
Newbie disappears.
Watchers take over thread with idle chatter.

Since dAN is the one who invented the group by coining the acronym, he can make the rules whatever he likes and change them at will.
