Umm...does that mean you're the reader he was talking about?
[should I have already known that somehow?]

ok this image is what i see when i click the link.
see the little play arrow in the top left of the screen? i can click that.
then i get a pop up dialogue box that says:
you do not have the necessary user permission to enable AutoUpdate.
Please contact your system administrator for more info.
so i click okay to that box.
then immediately i get an ie security pop up that says a website wants to open blah blah and this program will open outside of Protected mod blah blah
with the name of the program as Real Player Scheduler
and i can allow or disallow so i allow.
then i get ANOTHER pop up box that says
Currently Auto Update has no plug in available to play your selection.
GRRRRRRRRRRR.

Uninstall Real Player.

Why is it trying to use Real Player to play the file for you? I bet somehow you got sucked into selecting Real Player as your default video player. Go to settings and see if you can change it to Windows Media Player. That oughta fix the problem.
(And dump Real Player soonest. That thing's a piece of sh*t.

Actually, though Real Player has it's problems, if it's not your default, it definitely has it's uses, such as being able to easily download Youtube videos with a simple click

For the people who are having problems with the interview videos, can you view the ones from 2007 ok? If so, it's probably because I used wmv 9 this time - and I'll re-convert them to an earlier version.
I've also added links to the MP4 files (that are available in the vodcast) to the list. They're much larger, but should be more universally compatible.

nothing is working for me. period.
i uninstalled real player as suggested.
now i'm getting a big white blank screen with a tiny little blue

in the
upper left hand corner of the big white blank screen.
i checked my settings, i'm set to view with windows whatever whatever
and no romeo, i couldn't view any of the files. zero. nothing on the page
would play anything at all for me.
i know it's my computer in some way but WHAT? what IS it?

Okay lucimay.
Verify that Windows Media Player is installed on your system.
Start > Run > enter "wmplayer" and press OK. Windows Media Player should start. If it does, close it. If not, tell us what it says.
If ok so far, then
IE > Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Set Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program
Find .wmv, should be "Windows Media Audio/Video file" and "Windows Media Player". If not, tell us what it says. Then click Change program. Windows Media Player should be recommended. Choose it. Otherwise, click the arrow on the right to expand Other Programs. Find Windows Media Player, and choose it.
Close out of control panel.
Go to
www.stephenrdonaldson.com/fromtheauthor ... hp?Page=33
Right click on a video link, select Save Target As ..., and save the .wmv file to your Desktop.
Go to your desktop, find the .wmv file you just saved. Double-click on it, it should open with Windows Media Player, and play. If not, tell us what it says.
If not, right click on it, select Open With ..., and look at what is recommended. Tell us what it says. Then click arrow on right to choose Other Programs, and select Windows Media Player. It should open with Windows Media Player. If not, tell us what it says.

Yeah, but that won't fix lucimay's problems.
She can just secondary click the links and save target as and then open them with vlc. I'd think the codecs that come with it should let her watch the videos.

i was just going to type that rightously indignant noise one makes when they are rightously indignant but...there's no onomonopoetical word for that noise.
ok wayfriend i'll attempt to follow your instructions but first i have to go to the grocery. so...will report back. also, i don't usually do things like fart around with stuff in the computer i don't understand without speaking to my roommate Ger first. he's household IT. he'll be home once i've gotten home with the groceries so i'll consult, show him your post and the web site page with the files on it and see what he has to say.
thank you very much in advance!
oh...ok i did the first part and did the run wmplayer and that came up just fine. the windows media player i mean. it popped right up.
so then i did the next part to see if the .wmv file was associated to windows media player and it is. thats as far as i'm willing to go on my own.
be back later.
LAST EDIT:
i DID it!! WOOT!!! Wayfriend you ROCK!!!! YAYYAYAYAAY!!! HOOOORAYYYYYY WOOOOO HOOODEY!!!
luci happy girl!

This is why I love this site. No where else would I find friends who can use "onomonopoetical" in a sentence.
