It depends on the book and the reader. Twain and Hemingway translate very well. Huck Finn is especially good. Look for To Kill a Mockingbird read by Sissy Spacek. You cannot find a better marriage of voice and story.
On the flip side, when you must read a story, audio is a great way to get through them. Shakespeare is easier to remember and appreciate when you hear the acting. Other books, Atlas Shrugged for example, are so draining, audio is your only option.
