Fresh off my e-mail:
"Bring in a reusable bag on Earth Day and get 50% off 1 item."

Don't know if this promotion is everywhere, but... handy.

In DC, stores charge you a nickel for every plastic bag they have to give you. I picked up a nylon bag at CVS that folds into its own little tote thing -- it's way lighter and much less cumbersome than other folding tote bags I've seen. So I keep it in my purse. I end up using it for lots more than just hauling stuff home from CVS. 8)

at one of the yearly book sales at our library...

Spinors in Hilbert Space : P.A.M Dirac (1974): This book based on lectures given in 1969 at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, USA, deals with the basic aspects of spinors starting with a real Hilbert space formalism. Dirac concludes with the prophetic words "We have boson variables appearing automatically in a theory that starts with only fermion variables, provided the number of fermion variables is infinite. There must be such boson variables connected with electrons..."

I got a fantastic wooden shoe rack... has 5 levels, each level holds 2 or 3 pairs of adult shoes, more for kids'... $10

Another small wooden shoe rack that i put in my hall closet: $1.50.

I've been obsessing about wanting a shoe rack for awhile...

Also, I got a storage basket, 10"x10"x15"... natural and decorative: $1 (or maybe it was 50 cents).

A real page-turner.

I got a pair of pink Birkenstock sandals for n2000 here (about $14) brand new. Pink is not my fave, nor are Birkenstocks a fashion statement, but my feet love them (and Nigerian women think they're cool). :)

Null, a very old college friend of mine-- whose dadaesque aesthetic you could relate to-- has a series of pictures on Facebook called "Why would anyone throw this away?" He photos things he finds in the trash in NYC. One was of "Diseases of the Kidney, Volumes 1 & 2". You made me think of that.

Check it out! Stumbled upon White Gold Wielder at a different thrift store in a different city. Completes the set! Also Runes! And Rendezvous With Rama to boot :) The cover of WGW is beat up a bit, but the pages look unread!

I should mention, that the first thrift store had books 1 through 5, and that was it. The second thrift store had only these two books....Kind of neat I think!

I have been wanting to own a vase or glass in this beautiful lime green color for years:
Image

The one I got isn't shaped like that; it has a square base, which I like much more.
I look at it on the table and drool.

I'd expected it to be at 2-5 bucks.
nope. 50 cents.

also, an adorable matched set of coffee mugs I thought were $2 each.
No. $2 for 4.

Haha, nice. That's why you have to check every 2nd hand book place you see...you never know what you might find. :D

I got the entirety of a very good (but obscure) fantasy series (the Omaran Saga) at second hand book shops and flea-markets etc. It took me more than 10 years to find them all, and the last one was by pure chance. :D

I miss hunting for obscure books at used book stores. There was one series I was searching for pieces of for years - it almost never turned up in stores, and when Half.com came out people would list them for outrageous amounts due to the rarity, but I just wanted to read them.

Now they're all available on Kindle, and it feels like cheating.
