Were the CGI characters in Episode I & II believable?

Talk about both the movies and the books.

I thought they were rubbish... and that's the final thought on the matter...

I don't think so. With each new Star Wars prequel we see sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle improvements in the CGI artform. It may be that EP III will kick it all up a notch. :-)

I found Yoda quite believable, but Jar-Jar was a punk, will always be a punk, and I will always despise him. Although with any luck, he'll be killed in III.
