I've once more exhausted my Googling skills. I came up with:
- The Known World
The Free World
The Lost World
But none seem to be right

While this is not the name of the book it fits it surprisingly well.
OK, more hints: The author knows Electronics and built his own answering machine as a teen.

Thanks U. I admit to googling!
This is from one of my all time favourite authors:
A Saturday afternoon in November was approaching the time of twilight, and the vast tract of unenclosed wild known as Egdon Heath embrowned itself moment by moment.

All part of the game, Iolanthe
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one of my favourite books. If you're interested in philosophy it's a great read (Plato and Aristotle come in for a huge amount of flak and the author raises some fascinating questions about the influence of their philosophies.)

Is it Stephen King's Thinner?

Good guess Deer, but incorrect!
Next hint: Ok so it isn't Tolkien - he wouldn't start a book like that

and it isn't Rowling, or Martin.
That leaves King, Donaldson and Erikson.
