Right! I see it as an emotional dependence... like electronic comfort food.
If I'm trying to meet up with someone and they're late, that's uncomfortable.

But you know what people do? Pull out the phone and open it up to feel secure and like I'm doing the right thing, not just for communication.
Now that I have a cell, and feel the urge to do exactly that.

I feel like in times long ago, there were the kings and queens and nobles, and everyone (probably) talked about them and what they were doing, wearing, and owning...
...but now we are trying to reproduce this narcissistic "everyone-is-thinking-about-what-I-do" effect on a massive scale...

Hahaha, somebody said to me the other day that people no longer do things for the experience, but for the photo opportunity.

Smart phones and the coinciding rise of social media are already changing the way we interact with the world, and it's only going to get worse.

(Oh, I don't have a smart phone. I have a cell, because it's the only phone I have (no landline at home), but I can call and txt from it and that's it. )

I have a cell phone but it has very little functionality except for the phone. I don't like the idea of upgrading and getting a data plan...mainly because I'm cheap..I mean frugal. My wife and I are firmly upper middle class so its not that we cant afford it. I just dont see the point of paying $150 - $200 for a data plan for two phones. That same money saved over time is a nice retirement. Quite frankly I could dispose of my phone tomorrow and I wouldn't miss it. I sometimes leave it at home for days without looking at it then when I do, I note that I have no missed calls, no messages.

Well of course if you never use it and regularly leave it at home, people aren't going to try to get to you on it...
