Absolutely Sarge! I was brought up almost entierly on a diet of Hanna Barbera cartoons on tv from the early 60's onwards. Alas the names escape me, but Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear were two of the main ones, together with the Flintstones of course.

The same cartoons were featured weekly in the comics I read as a young child [from four years onward] in particular one aptly named 'TV COMIC' that was specifically geared to the younger end of the market. This I think featured 'Popeye' on it's front cover each week [at least when I was reading it].

I think the old comic genre is amazing also Sarge. In particular I love the 'Wham', 'Smash', and 'Thunder era which featured such unforgettable creations as 'Janus Stark', 'Charley Peace', 'The Steel Claw' and 'Captain Hurricaine'. I have long felt that Hollywood could [in the right hands] produce a fantastic film actually following the format of an old-style comic with a series of stories, cartoons and serious inclusions, all rolled into one.
