I just started Forbidden Knowledge.
I'm sure you can all assume that I'm loving it as much as you all did.
-So how does it end? Did the Butler do it?

OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK. It has been difficult. I got the first four, but could not get 'This Day All Gods Die'. It is not in print here. I had been looking for it for about eight months before I decided I would have to order it from America.
It arrived today.
So, with my gap collection complete, I began reading 'The Real story'. And finished reading it. A great book.
I will post again when I am further into the series.

You sure? I got all five in the same edition, in the UK, last august. Although I did have to order TDAGD form Amazon.

Yeah. They stopped printing them about then. I have the first four in the newest edition, and saw the fifth in the bookshop, but by the time I got round to trying to by it, everywhere was sold out and couldn't get any more. Amazon.co.uk couldn't source it, and neither could play.com.
edit - Although amazon.co.uk do claim to have it, all I got was tantalizing delivery estimates, that were not met, and then put back a month or two, until they finally decided they didn't have any copies.

I read
The Real Story recently. It took me about two weeks

I enjoyed it, but it really read as a stand-alone novella - which is what it is, I suppose. By chance, I found 4 and 5 in used book shops, but I haven't got 2 or 3, so I haven't progressed yet.

When you go on to books 2 and 3, a universe opens up -- and keeps opening. It's well worth whatever you need to do to get the ones you don't have yet.

Well, I am about 3/4 of the way through Forbidden Knowledge, and things are really starting to get good. I can't wait to see what happens.

It's really a matter of whether I buy book 2 of the Gap and finish that series, or start and finish Mordant's Need, which I also found (both books, no less) in the above used book shops.

Agreed. Donaldson's finest work, I've never enjoyed serious reading so much.

CJ, the 2nd-5th books in The Gap are far superior to TRS. As Nathan said, it's Donaldson's finest work.
I got about 75 pages into Mirror of her Dreams and came grinding to a halt. I'll take another stab at it in the winter.

I recently re-read TRS for the first time in 5-6 years, and was surprised to find that I actually enjoyed it more than I had in previous readings.
However, I still don't believe the rest of the series should be judged by it. Books 2-5 are a literary rollercoaster ride. Sit down, hold on, and don't forget to breathe. Starting the next book on a work night is not recommended.

Currently reading book 4...have never read a series so emotinally dynamic in a long time.....topics involved may be difficult for some...I know for me....an addictive read nonetheless
