yeah, I heard the God Forbid album... Cool ideas here and their but it's a bit old school and boring I found...

Yes, I find death metal done badly (or mediocrely) can be quite dull and repetetive, but this album had enough to keep me interested. It's only eight tracks or something anyway, so it's not long enough to bore me.

Today it's Pelican. Slow, instrumental metal that alternates between quite light and airy, and suffocatingly heavy. When the guitars kick in near the beginning of Mammoth, it's possibly the heaviest thing I've ever heard. It's really good, but I have to be in the right mood.

I've looked for Pelican, but haven't been able to find it.

Right now I'm listening to Candiria. Not bad.

What are they like? The name doesn't ring any bells.

A lot of different styles... hardcore, thrash, ambient, even some jazz-type stuff and hip-hop here and there.

I'll try downloading them once I've finished with Entombed

Ok, I obtained Candiria... It's certainly quite unusual. I'm somewhat indifferent when it comes to the hip-hop elements (though it's an improvement over Bizkit-style rap-rock) but I like most of the varying styles. Works surprisingly well.

You want "Death Rock", get Six Feet Under...former singer for Cannible Corpse Chris Barnes...get the first two albums, "Haunted" and "Warpath"...
their latest one ive only heard one song from, but it fits into this 'category' as well...i havent heard anyof True Carnage, but avoid Maximum Violence...

ill just break it down into bands from each category..

Power Metal-not really toomany bands that i listen to fit into this category..it seems to be pretty 'poofy' to me...but there are some good bands that could be considered Power Metal:
Blind Guardian(Ger)- one of the best; they did a coupld of Tolkien-influence albums: Nightfall in Middle Earth, based on the Silmarillion, and..another one i cant remember...Demons and Wizards: a collaboration between Iced Earth and Blind Guardian

Death Metal- Morbid Angel(US), early Obituary(US), Nile(US), Vader(Pol); Monstrosity(US); Hate Eternal(US); Cryptopsy(Can); Incantation(US); early Death(US); Cannibal Corpse(US)..ive seen NIle, Dying Fetus, Divine Empire, Exhumed, and Misery Index...they were all killer live...course Nile was at a HOuse of Blues, and the others were in a small bar...but they were still all awesome...

Black Metal- Black Metal in its basic form has no keyboards or anything like that...early Darkthron Bathory Burzum and Mayhem(all early) are prime examples of the early BM that is worth listening to...the pioneers, if you will...Ulver are also really good...Black Metal is one of the most fought over genres, as people have different ideas as to what BM should entail...some say it should be nothing but grim and black and necro and hateful satanic light-hating evil..and all that jazz...some think that if the lyrics are satanic, then its automatically BM...(the black in black metal means the same as the black in black magic, for an example)...
i really dont care, as im not a satanist, or evil or anything...BUT, we all have a darkside, and mine likes some of this..heheh...one of my favorite bands is Cradle of Filth...not Black Metal, but theyre one of the most widely debated bands...anyway...bands: Emperor, Immortal(Nor), Borknagar(Nor), Dimmu Borgir(NOR), Mayhem(NOR), Burzum(NOR), Summoning, Detroyer 666(AUS)kind of a mix of DM and BM) Ulver(NOR), Sigh(japanese), Beherit(a little more on the extreme side)Mystic Circle(GER)...theres loads of others..theres no real 'safe' place to start with this genre, as yer either into this kind of thing or your not...

an off-shoot of Black Metal is NSBM: National Socialist Black Metal...basically white power/aryan crap...i dont have a problem with the message, as i dont always listen to the 'message' a band throws out there, but alot of these bands just come off as lame...but...then again, there are some good ones...and, as someone said about DM...you cant really understand what theyre saying half the time anyway, so it doesnt matter what theyre saying...

Speed/Thrash: pre-Chaos AD Sepultura; Hallows Eve; Exodus;Slayer; Destruction, Sodom, Nuclear Assault, old Anthrax(although new anthrax is still pretty cool...not as thrashy as the old stuff) yes, old Metallica...pre Black Album; Iced Earth(although some consider this power Metal, the first 4 albums are awesome albusm...definately thrashy); Exhorder; and ill be darned if i can think of any more off hand...(theres so many)

Heavy Metal-this is basically all the old school stuff, before all the divisions and sub genres came out...this is where your Judas priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Sabbath(aslo Doom) and stuff like that goes...Mercyful Fate..one of the first satanic bands, along with Venom...

Doom Metal-While Sabbath was the first Metal band, their influence can be seen especially well in this category...these are the slower bands...Type O Negative(US), My Dying Bride(Eng) Candlemass(Swe), Thorrs Hammer(Nor),not very well known); Cathedral(Eng), St.Vitus's Dance; Trouble; the Obsessed...i dont own MANY albums from this style, but i plan on getting more...

Viking-alot of these bands could be considered DM, except for the lyrics...about...of course...Vikings: Amon Amarth; Enslaved; Einjerer...thats kind of all i know...heheh..off hand, anyway...Odhinn...Therion do not fit into this category...their earlier stuff was DM, then they started adding more symphonic elements, and eventually started playing with a full orchestra...they are really good, but not Viking Metal...

then theres tough guy Metal-one guess whos in THIS genre

Rap-Metal-does not exist
Grunge Metal-does not exist
Nu-Metal-see RapMetal
Metal-core-does not exist
Grind core-no clue...sounds like DM to me-but Napalm Death is the only one that comes to mind...ive heard Cannibal Corpse called this...but again..no clue

Death Rock.. as i said, Six Feet Under; Impaler...and i dont really think they could be called this, but GWAR are still an awesome band, they are awesome live, and you should listen to them...more...Death...punk..horror...funny....stuff...i dunno

"dark" Metal-not really a genre, really, but i put all the bands that arent Black Metal but have elements of it in here...:Cradle of Filth, Opeth, and a bunch of others i cant think of...heheh


that covers alot...of course, theres alot of bands that have elments of one or more sub genres, creating somethin else entirely...alot of bands blend Metal with folk music from their homelands...like IN Extremo...Medieval kinda..Metal...but...theres already too many categories and sub categories and sub sub genres and that crap....the main ones are just to give an idea of content/atmosphere and the like...

Comprehensive! I wouldn't agree with all your points, but metalheads can argue over definitions and sub-genres endlessly, so I'm not going to bother. I will however, check out that link. Incidentally, Type O as doom? Pish. *cough*goth*cough*

theyve been called goth and all this other crap, but theyre heavy, they went from fast with slow parts to slower and now thayre really slow...

not all doom is really slow, though...its all how you interpret it, i guess

I see no sludge Not that I'm a big sludge fan or anything, but there's a Nottingham-based sludge band called Bumsnogger who need to win awards for having the best name I've heard in years. Their best song is UFO but their best song title is Murdering the Homeless

As regards a "safe" starting point for black metal, I started with Enthrone Darkness Triumphant by Dimmu Borgir - IMO that's about as accessible as black metal gets, and certainly more accessible than the old-school stuff.

Does anyone still listen to Celtic Frost? I used to love them, where are they on the spectrum? What about Voivod?

Voivod's still around. Did some touring in Canada and the East Coast last year, as far as I know, with their new bassist Jason Newstead, formerly of Metallica.

i was listening to Celtic Frost today, actually...id consider them thrash...they were another one of those bands that came out before the category names were really widely used...

and sludge is usually mentioned in the same breath as doom and stoner rock...well, its been my experience, anyway...

and Voivod are usually considered thrash...i have a few Metal Massacre cds with a song from them on it...

Yes... I don't know if a connosieur (sp?) such as yourself would call them black metal, but...Anaal Nathrakh are the most evil-sounding band I have ever heard. Palehorse used to hold that honour, but Anaal are just...vile Ugh

Stoner rock, now that's my bread and butter right there. QOTSA, Kyuss, (Desert Sessions), Melvins, Clutch... Sleep, The Obsessed, Dead Meadow, Electric Wizard, Atomic Bitchwax, though I tend to fade out of the spectrum around Cathedral. Great (ok, identical) cover of Sabbath's Solitude, though.

Funny, I was just talking about Sigh and In Extremo over at my board. Also Subway to Sally. None of which I can get a hold of. Really wanted to hear Sigh, too.

If you're talking generally, there are too many for me to even remember, never mind list, but you can see a few in my list in the Headbangerz topic. If you mean black metal, I don't listen to a lot. I have assorted albums by Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth (I consider them black metal), I have one by Akercocke, one by Dark Funeral, one by Anal Nutcrack a couple of Emperor albums I haven't listened to much, and an album by a silly quasi-black band called Gloomy Grim. I may have forgotten the odd one or two, but you get the idea.
