I used to watch Family Ties a lot, actually. I've even seen the final episode. Hippie parents versus conservative son. What a wonderful twist on teenage rebellion.

So why did I put it on that list?

Personally, I can't stomach most of what is on television these days. Almost all sit coms now are nothing but people bed hopping, (I stopped watching Friends once everyone started sleeping with each other). The satuaration of these stupid "reality" shows is ridiculous. And most of the dramas are laced with foul language and way too much graphic imagery. There is very little I watch now.

The West Wing
Judging Amy
ER (which sometimes really crosses the graphic imagery line for me)
Joan of Arcadia
Touched by an Angel (It still runs on the Hallmark channel)


Those are really the only shows I watch. The rest is all garbage to me. I find myself turning to channels like TVLAND and Hallmark, who are showing the older shows like Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Home Improvement, MASH and Growing Pains. I loved that stuff. I wish those channels would also bring back shows like "Life Goes On" and "Family".

TV has really gone to hell in a handbasket in the last 10 years. I can't stand most of it...

Geez, your list of sitcoms is the antithesis of everything I watch, Furls. I tried watching Judging Amy (only because I was waiting for Angel to come on right after it), and it was all right. Anyway, my top three sitcoms (Buffy, Married With Children, Simpsons) were running strong in the 90s, so I can't say the last ten years were crap.

In fact, I feel like we're still in the 90s, really. Not much change, honestly. The 80s and 70s and 60s were so distinctive and different from each other. Seems like the 90s and the 00s are pretty much alike, stylistically.

Anyway, as far as sitcoms from olden times, I go for All In The Family, Sanford & Son, and even Andy Griffith. Only 80s sitcom I really like are Cheers and The Jeffersons. Two of the best-written sitcoms of that decade.

Now Buffy. This show is pure nonsense. It's funny now it tries to make a comment on the high school lifestyle yet it promotes it. You know, everyone is attractive, it's all about who likes who, who's dating who . . . .

I'm simply going to say that Buffy was lot more than that, and you must have been searching for flaws, rather than trying to genuinely enjoy it.

Also, SRD is a fan of Buffy's writer (Joss Whedon), so don't go there, bub.

But yes, Buffy was so much more than that. Some very nicely choreographed fights; very good occult stuff at times (though they also went overboard at times); hot young ladies; and two big strengths:
1) Just darned good writing! If anybody watches the episode called Hush, where there is no dialog (all voices were magically stolen), and doesn't think it's impressive... Well, you have my sympathies. And there's also the episode where Buffy makes Spike tell her how he killed two previous slayers. (One was a Chinese girl, during the Boxer Rebellion, the other was on a NYC subway in the 1970's.) THAT was one powerful episode! The subway scene was incredible!! Switching back and forth from the backflash to the storytelling, then blending the two as Spike in the subway speaks to present-day Buffy... MAN!!

2) Witty! In one episode, Buffy was sick in the hospital, and the kids in the children's ward were telling her that they were scared, because Death came to kill them occasionally. And she even saw this thing while she had a high fever. So Xander says, "Oh, hey, if he asks you to play chess, don't even do it. He's like a wizard!"

And the episode with the mummy. A kid was missing, and they had reason to suspect something odd was going on. As usual.

Giles: "Uh... Yes, well, we'll look into that as soon as we rule out evil curses."
Buffy: "You know, one day I'm gonna live in a town where they automatically rule out evil curses. Just without saying!"

Sorry, Foul, but it's my opinion; live with it. Yeah there is more to buffy, (Hush was great episode), but with its flaws I'd rather do something else than watch it every week. Anyway, Foul this thread IS an overgeneralisation. Sweeping statement about 80s being bad because of some bad shows? Please . . . .
I never stated that my statements was that I ALL believed about Buffy. Perhaps it just doesn't click with me, regardless I don't care for it that much.

Beauty And the Beast was running in the late '80s. Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. I have every episode on tape.

Not the reason the 80s were bad--just one of the reasons! Other reasons include:

Mullets, yuppies, New Wave, Members Only jackets, Reganomics, the Young Urban Mother, Ralph Macchio, and, lest we forget, Corey "the Antichrist" Feldman.

FOul, I agree with you, except for Moonlighting. FOr the first 3 seasons, that show was awesome! But, it did die a horrible death.
