I haven't seen that, but I really can't imagine Tom Cruise as Lestat. He has the cocky arrogance, but...no. Old Cruisey is too annoying to be Lestat. Bleh.

well he was, and quite wonderful. I must admit that I was skeptical when i first heard he would be the actor, but the part couldn't have been played better.

Cruise has 2 expressions: bored and angry.

Is "smug grin" a variation on bored? Anyway, you missed a vital Cruise component - the "Oscar face". That is, the expression he wears when he's in a "serious" role and hoping for a nomination. It's a kind of painfully earnest "For the love of God! I'm acting here! Please, someone! See me act!" expression.

(credit goes to Total Film magazine for drawing my attention to the Oscar face)

Tom Cruise? (sorry Furls)

It was written before
It's inevitable, but I think of Cruise as movie star first, and actor a distant second. It's been argued that he basically plays the same role in all of his movies: that of Tom Cruise.
And that's exactly the issue, he does not act, he does not become a role or character. Furthermore, I have a friend in California who says his smarmy smile (or is it really a grin) creeps her out big time. Of course this is not necessarily a bad trait, John Wayne became a film legend not acting.

However, I have enjoyed some of his movies, Minority report, Top Gun, Risky Business (Joe Pantolitano and Rebecca DeMornay made it interesting). But some others The Firm a big snooze fest (based on a boring book), All the right moves (boring with the equally boring Lea Thompson).

Sorry Furls.

How do you know he's annoying as Lestat if you haven't watched the movie? *hint hint nudge nudge watch the freaking movie*

As has been pointed out, he always plays the same character, so if I find him annoying in any other film, I have little doubt I'd find him annoying as Lestat. :|

I've never really understood the attraction myself. I did really like the Last Samuri but I think that's because it was a big enough project to keep his ego in check.

I also liked Jerry MaGuire in spite of him........Rene Zellweger (sp?) the little boy (I can't remember his name!), and Cuba Gooding carried that movie.

No doubt Tom Cruise is a great looking man. But, he just doesn't send me. However, I will go and see his movies.

with the right director Tommy is fine. he was good in War of the Worlds. though Spielburg lets the movie sag in the middle.
