I bought a copy of LFB at a garage sale in 89. I read it (though I mostly read sci-fi. I found it very enjoyable, but did not have the other books. About two years later (at another garage sale) (and dates could be wrong) I found the whole set. I read them all over a winter. I have since read them two more times cover to cover. The latest this past summer. And this fall I have re-read all of the gap series. Sci-fi is my favorite and TCTC is my only foray into fantasy. I love the books, but I have to have a little space between readings. In comparing the two TCTC and the Gap series. Donaldson ends the Gap series, but TCTC seems unfinished to me. But the I guess that is why we all want a Third Chronicles.

Yep TCTC does seem as though the way is open for more.

First time i read the chronicles was in 1990/91...but...and i know most of you will be amazed by this...i bought the 2nd chronicles first. Which means i read the 2nd Chrons first and the 1st Chrons second!!!!!! I know..sacraligious(or however u spell it) but thats how it happened...i reread it about 7 years later(all 6 books) in the right order and it blew me away. I've converted my brother and Mum and friend at work...lol

Well if its the way you did it then its the way you did it, no-one will gainsay you. In fact I'm interested in hearing what effect that actually had on your appreciation of the story.

What was it like reading T2CTC without having read TCTCTU prior?
What was it like reading TCTCTU for 1st time, already having read T2CTC?

This is actually an experience denied the vast majority of the rest of us! But I suppose its not all that different to reading LOTR and then the Silmarillion ... although events are little more present and reliant in TCTC.

HABD, its got me flummoxed attempting to guess what impression it would have!

Sorry for the delay in replying...well i bought the 2nd Chrons purely on the back of the review on the back of The Wounded Land. The Sunbane idea sounded awesome so in decided to buy it after not really looking into the whole story(the fact there were 3 prior books).
What i was to read just astounded me...mainly the Sunbane but also the characters and of course TC himself. There were many references to the first Chrons..esp in Andelain so i skipped them as much as i could really but meeting his dead was interesting.
I regret reading them in the order i did because i feel i missed out on the whole experience but there you go...its done now. The secong time i read them(in the right order) was a whole new experience for me cos it all made so much more sense..esp the 2nd Chrons.
Reading the 1st Chrons second i was a little disappointed in it in a way. The 2nd Chrons is so much more intense than the 1st in my opinion and i missed Lynden and didnt think much of Hile Troy...loved Mhoram though, a man that TC mentions alot in the 2nd Chrons.

Well we haven't had the experience of doing 2nd first, so we're even there!

I would be tempted to suggest that you put them aside for a few years, let yourself forget a lot of it, and then give them another go, in the right order of course.

But that's not my place, as you might very well want to read them sooner than that!

As long as you enjoyed the story as a whole, that's the main thing, eh!

Ugh... I'm ashamed after reading all these things. I have read all the books once except for WGW... didn't even read that one...

I started when I was in 7th grade so I didn't really understand them completely. Though, you should be proud, I'm starting again with Lord Foul's Bane and will make my slowly but surely through the rest of them.

I've read the both the First and Second Chronicles maybe 3 times from end to end over the last 20+ years. I'll go back more often and read favorite parts of the books when the mood hits me.

I used to reread the 1st chrons every few years, but only read the 2nd chrons once. Then in 2002 I reread every one of SRD's books. It's incredible how much more there is to discover each time.

I picked up the series just was The One Tree came to paperback, and White Gold Wielder hit the streets. Since then I always go through the series when I'm between other things that really catch my interest. And you'd think that other things have never caught my interest since I've read the entire series well over a dozen times.

I've read the whole lot once. I've read TIW all the way through twice in total. But I too have re-read favourite parts over and over

yeah, I've read them a total of twice right now...but I'm almost done with my third read (at WGW) in preparation for the Third Chronicles.

When I first started to read the series, The Power That Preserves had about 2-3 months before hitting the streets. (It seems a lifetime ago!)
I am now currently on, I believe, my 6th time going through the 6 book series.
I had also gone through the GAP series thrice. (That's 3 times for you commoners )
I still get rocked mentally when I see that single word that Thomas speaks in The One Tree:

Too many to count. My first read was when I was in high school, back in the late 70's. I'm now 40 and I've read them from LFB to WGW at least 20 times...and that isn't counting the many times I've read different chapters and passages when the mood has struck me. Believe it or not, I STILL find something new with each read too. That's the way of SRD
