yep. it doesn't ake much either. His body of work (while of some questionable value) is diverse and broad.

Weaving got the job done as Elrond, but he went above and beyond with Smith.

I can see Weaving now saying: Hellfire Mr. Anderson.

or

Don't touch me Mr. Anderson.

I never bought Weaving as Elrond, but he was excellent as Smith. Indeed, Hugo Weaving is Agent Smith, IMO.

Yup. And that's the key. Many who read LOTR had an image of Elrond. In my case, only a vague one. I could never describe a character from a book well enough for a sketch-artist to draw, but I have something. Weaving wasn't it, but I'm not slightly disappointed by his performance. (But then, maybe the cartoon influenced my vision.) Mind you, when I realized who it was, when I finally recognized those eyes, I was briefly thrown. It took a minute to seperate Smith from Elrond.

OTOH, there was no book to read to get an impression of Smith before the movie came out. But can anyone conceivably do it better???? Not bloody likely! He was even great in Revolutions, when he was asking Neo what he was fighting for. "Can you tell me, Mr. Anderson? Do you even know?"

Totally agree with you there Fist, I thought that rant by Smith was excellent.

I think Smith was a much more well played part on Weaving part that Elrond. Not, I hasten to say that his part as Elrond was played badly; rather to say that Smith was not copied out of a book. I got a different impression from Elrond than the films conveyed.

As did we all - that's the thing about books. As Mr Donaldson has pointed out, it's a collaboration between the imaginations of the author and the reader. On the other hand, a film is all laid out, with far less room for "interactive" interpretation.

Any additional opinions about weaving as Covenant?

Sir Ian McKellan is in both Xmen flicks, and LOTR...and Christopher Lee is in the first two LOTR flicks and Episode II(yeah, not a very good movie, but hes in both legendary franchises now)
