@Zefa.......I would have LMAO no matter who typed "The One Mill." I thought it was a great response.
Especially since, although pondering the material used for the Wards is interesting, the fact that the Wards were created in one way or another is enough for the story. How Kevin created them or on what they were written is of no import, really.
The Old Lords were well travelled, and could have gotten any number of materials unavailable in the Land from a number of sources.
Let us not forget as well that not all the Wards were written. Some are never found......and the Seventh Ward is Amok, hardly a written Ward.

Its just a theory...
Through the use of the 8th Ward, one person whom is in constant communication with the Land is our own Lord Stephen. Those whom need history remembered and written simply contact him and thus the words are saved. He has a magical pen, which uses a lost art, and it constantly writes even when he sleeps, so the lore of the land is never forgotten.
This also explains how Lord Stephen is able to draw us all into the Land, since he is the master of the Wards. I believe one of the books that was recently discovered says it best:
" Lord Stephen's Writ - Agony and Ecstasy in 10 parts with Overtones of Historical Reverence and Diligent Detail : The First, Second and Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever"
Cheers,
