Oh, you seem to be the man when it comes to horror. Your list contains a few of my personal faves eg The Exorcist, Alien, Pet Semetary (although the book was way scarier), I was about 10 I think when I first saw Night Of The Living Dead and The Shining really freaked me.

I have to say when someone mentions the words "horror", I immediately think of Nightmare On Elm Street - Freddy Kruger scared the you know what out of me, Blair Witch Project ( a lot of people poo-pooed this movie but I have lost my passion for camping outdoors because of it) and Signs with Mel Gibson.

I`d love to see your Halloween piccy. :D

Agreed. Pet Sematary the book was scarier but I still think the movie was very well done. I Also enjoyed the original Nightmare on Elm St. and found Blair Witch to be scary. Unfortunately Blair Witch became a victim of it's own popularity and eventually succumber to popular backlash. Nonetheless I still thought it was well done and different from the formulaic crap that passes for horror these days. Do you read horror as well? Have you read King's "Night Shift" collection? There's some real creepy stuff in there!

The only 3 movies that have ever scared me are The Amityville Horror, Superstition (never met anyone else who's ever seen it, saw it when I was 8), and The Ring.

I enjoyed Pumpkinhead, The Evil Dead series (though it's hard to really consider it horror), House (again, kinda... kinda not), Witchboard, An American Werewolf in London, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Lost Boys, Killer Clowns from Outer Space, Night Breed (or anything by or based on Clive Barker's stuff), and The Prophecy.

If you like slasher flicks, check out House of a 1000 Corpses in the theatres. Very well-done, especially stylistically, but you have to keep in mind the director (Rob Zombie) was trying to make an homage to the genre while pushing some boundaries or it will seem cliched.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Brinn, I haven`t read Night Shift, but my brother is a bit of a King fan so I`ll have to check it out. Haven`t read much horror. I tend to read more fantasy and watch the horror. Two books I have enjoyed though are both by Peter James, Twilight and Host. I`ve read them a couple of times - have you heard of them?

Caer Sylvanus, I agree with you about Amityville Horror, that was creepy.

Nice! I love the fact that there are other horror fans out there! I haven't heard of the two that you mentioned Infelice but I'll put them on my list. And Syl, I'll second your choices and give a hearty endorsement to Clive Barker as well.

If your brother has Nightshift Infelice, I would heartily recommend that you borrow it for a night and read "The Boogeyman" story. It will take you about 45 minutes to read the whole story but I guarantee it will scare you...To this day I never go to sleep with my closet door open! And if you like both fantasy and horror you would enjoy Clive Barker immensely...particularly Weaveworld and Imajica. His writing is an eclectic mix of fantasy, horror and erotica and his imagination is boundless.

Didn't they make @ least a TV movie of the Nightshift--I think Tales From the Crypt sponsored it. The story of the Scientists and the Roaches was particularly gruesome...I have chickened out once again in renting the Ring..I just had 2 ask the video store guy's opinion. He said Ringu (the original was better and the Ring, itself was not so good, but u do have 2 deal w/subtitles...) b so thusly confused :? I rented The Four Feathers and enjoyed it immensely!

Infelice! Watch Sam Neill in In The Mouth of Madness, in the "Lovecraftian"arena. Then, if that doesn't do it, have a Neill fest and watch Event Horizon as well. I call Event Horizon: 2001 meets Hellraiser. (along w/Syl's choices, Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow, In Dreams and Strieber's Communion w/Christopher Walken, again  will all pretty-much scare the hell o/o u!)
fall far and well Pilots!

Hmmm, I will definitely be checking out Night Shift Brinn and under your advice, I will keep my closet door firmly closed. :( When I was little there was a Boogeyman that lived inside my closet.
I`ll also investigate the Clive Barker books as well and I`ll get back to, if I survive :(

Thanks danlo for the heads-up on the Sam Neill movies (seen Event Horizon and I feel its worth a revisit) - I`m off to my video store to see if they have the other one - its a bleak rainy day here today, perfect for curling up in front of a good horror movie.
I`ll be interested in finding the Christopher Walken movie too, just looking at his face gives me the creeps. ( I didn`t mean that the way it came out - I just think he has this face thats perfect for creepy, scary movies). 8O

for movies: The Omen series (especially the first film) was a pretty good horror

for books check the British author James Herbert, he wrote some very good horror novels, like Domain, Moon, The Spear, The Magic Cottage, The Fog

Yeah, The Omen was pretty good .

Saw the driector's cut version at the movies ..by myself...at night....the walking down the stairs backwards bit really freaked me. 8O

I think I read a James Herbert novel - something about rats or something can't quite remember - just remember that I thought it was worth investigating more of his books - obviously I never got around to doing that though.

The japanese original "Ringu" is one of the greatest horror films of all time. Not many films have made my skin crawl like this one. Great haunting atmosphere and very imaginative horrorsequences. Ther is also a sequel called Ringu 2 which is almost as good Some say better. And and a prequel called Ringu 0 which is also good.

Infelice,

Are you mixing your horror movies? I wasn't aware of a Director's cut of the Omen . Might you be referring to the latest release of The Excorcist and the notorious "Spiderwalk" when Regan walks down the stairs backwards while vomiting blood? :?:

Ahhhh! Right you are Brinn. That's the one I was referring to - I always get those two mixed up for some reason.
