I'll collect info from this thread and talk to Steve at WFC in October. I dont' think anything needs to be done right away, and he's got other things to occupy his thoughts at the moment.

But I do agree that it would have to be an SRD fan club, and not TC fan club.

My only concern has already been stated by others - what's the value added by having an official club (compared to what we do already)? It will require some continuing work for several volunteers. So there needs to be some major improvement realized, or noone will want to put in the hours.

I'm still not 100% sure it was a joke but I'm pretty sure it is... It had me in stitches either way

Edited to add that I question what additional benefit the official club designation has over what KW already is. Are there tax benefits or something? Officially a non-profit group?

Oh, my apologies - I had already forgotten about that question in the GI. As to your questions about the fan club, I've never belonged to one, so I'm not sure about any tax breaks or anything along those lines.

I suppose we could use the dues to offset whatever the costs are to Vain in terms of running this board. Other than that, I think the Watch is better than a fan club. The last fan club I joined was for the Monkees -- for my buck and a half (or whatever it was), I got a membership card and a poster, I think, and that was about it. No membership list, no way to contact other fans, nuthin'. And this was in the waning days of the group's popularity, so it's not like you could find Monkees fans on every street corner.... But I digress. (Sad, isn't it, what happens to old folks, when they start living in the past?) The point is that I get a lot more bang for my buck out of KW than I ever have from a fan club.

OMG, I luuuuuurve the Monkees! Davy Jones was adorable! (Now he's short, orange, and leathery, but oh well.) I'm a Nick-at-Nite fan though, not an original.

Yikes. I saw one of the Monkees performing in the tour of the musical Aida, and that was quite a mind-bender. Though I wasn't around when they originally were...

In terms of helping defray the costs of the Watch, I believe it's possible to use services like amazon.com to solicit small donations over the internet from visitors to the site. (In general, to me a fan club seems redundant in light of the offical site and the Watch.)

i dont really see a point... as was said before, this forum does pretty much what a fanclub would do...except charge people money
