If we're gettin high [ku] around here...my first-ish??? haiku...[[really, I cracked myself up with it]]

"Beef is what to eat"
And James Garner has had a
Quadruple bypass."

If ya think that's bad, you do NOT want to read any of my limericks.
They're some high-level shit.

WF!!!! That was fun! Better than the villanelle! [and hopefully less work] and not just cuz I'm in it.

For Suz: these might actually already be on the Watch somewhere...but my second favorite bar of all time [and I know me some bars....well, I know them when I can remember them, and the longer it takes to remember them the better they probably were...] had a guy on Wed's. with GREAT contests. One Wed's, it was best thing [[it's been a long time, but I THINK it was ANY word-thing, poem/shortstory/song/rap whatever] using "moosehead." Moosehead is a beer. If you won, you got a case of it. So, double limerick [which WON by the way....though not much for competition, all things considered]:

There once was a woman who said,
she'd take any lover to bed.
she'd bump and she'd grind
for days at a time
never knowing where that path led.

For now she's old and unwed
Any day soon she'll be dead
She had many lovers
but never recovered
from the night that she gave the Moose head.

BONUS---other sex, for fun---
there once was a fellow named Ennis
whose nose was shaped much like a penis
when he would blow
his sex-live would go
from so-so to goddamn near genius.

OK, guess I have ample excuse to trot out a "greatest hits" reissue.

Some year ago, when Wayfriend was conducting his multiple-round Win Wayfriend's Money Survivor games, this was one of the challenges we faced:
Wayfriend wrote:Each Survivor must create a limerick. The limerick must be about "Lord Quagmire", and how he would survive the Sarangrave. Lord Quagmire must be based on the Glenn Quagmire character in the TV show Family Guy. There's plenty of internet out there dedicated to Quagmire, so consider ramping up part of your task. You can write as many verses of limerick as you like, but of course you must write at least one.
Savor Dam wrote:There once was a horn-dog, Quagmire
Who did to a Lordship aspire
But desire to mate
Led this darn reprobate
In haste to bedchambers retire

When the Lords rode off east to their quest
(And in time had to face dreaded skest)
He ignored his orders
And went to his quarters
Where desires were never repressed

A conquest was once heard to say
"Oh dear, I am wearing away
The inside of my thighs
Look just like mince pies
For Quagmire won't shave every day"

What fate for this lover so ardent?
The end of his tale's quite important
Our oversexed schnook
Got moved to a new book
As Master Eremis of Mordant

:haha:

I don't have a lot of books on technique and such for fiction. I've been reading for, like, ever. When I was in grad school, we didn't read many how-to-do-it books -- instead, we read fiction like writers instead of like lit critters. (Lit critters. Heh.*) Which is to say that instead of trying to define what the author was trying to say and attempting to put him/her in a labeled box, we looked at *how* they did what they did. Which is a big reason why I liked my grad school lit courses better than any others I've ever had.

That said...

Agreed on Bird by Bird. Any of Joseph Campbell's work is helpful. Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is another I liked -- but it's not so much technique as it is observations on the writer's life. The Sacred Hoop by Paula Gunn Allen shed a lot of light on Native storytelling and how it differs from the linear narratives we're used to in the West.

I haven't read Stephen King's book, but I know a lot of people who love it.

When I was super-stuck creatively, The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron got me unstuck.

That's all I can think of. Vraith, if you remember what you wanted to ask me, lemme know.

*About those lit critters: My editor talked me into attending the International Convention of the Fantastic in the Arts a year -- two years? -- ago. Anyway, she went with me to World Fantasy Convention when it was in Columbus, OH (which is where she lives) and she said it bugged her that the panelists were all just sort of throwing out opinions without offering anything to back them up. She much preferred ICFA -- okay, and she lured me in by saying SRD goes every year.

So I went with her. And it turns out that it's seriously an academic conference -- people present papers and answer questions about their research. It was dry as dust. I went to a mythology panel where I knew more than the presenters. (And then I made an idiot of myself by asking an uninformed question in the panel on SRD's work, and he turned around and looked at me as if I were loony. But that's a story for another day...)

Anyway. When I go to panels at WFC, all the ideas pinging around give me ideas to explore in my own work. The ICFA panels gave me zero ideas for my own work.

I LOVE lit/crit. Not nearly as much as Lit/Writ...
But...it's like [fleshy analogy coming--[so to speak]---
There's a list of "Great things to do Naked!"
A lot of things on the list...but some are one kind of stimulating...the others another....
Lit/Crit never gave me an idea of WHAT to write about...but I've gotten a ton of other things from it.

ONWARD:

High- Level, Lu??? You damn elitist! Don't you know semi-porn/sex-relevant, Fifty Shades, IS high-level now?
Street is --'LEET!
'Specially when the woman is centered!
In that vein:

There once was a woman from Lowing
Whose clitoris was long and flowing.
She walked the street
It rubbed her feet
Always she was coming and going.

:haha: Now Im wondering what kind of thread Ive walked into 8O

Maybe we should start an X rated thread just for th Great Things To do exchage of ideas 🤷‍♀️ and go tos to assist V and his limerick fodder .. though from the sounds of it, V has that pretty well covered 🤔

Though I will say well two words ... Tantric meditation .. a great way to connect with yourself and your partner.
