Heh...sorry to bump this...but I couldn't even believe that this was a topic. Chrono Trigger completely blows Secret of Mana out of the water. The Dreaming sums up most of what I'd say. But wow... Chrono Trigger is like my favorite game of all time. And I absolutely HATED Secret of Mana. ARRRG! Heh. Sorry, I just really didn't like the game. The plot in SoM was SOOO STUPID. And the characters were pathetic! Come on, the main character's name was "Boy", along with characters "Girl" and "Sprite". And the game was so easy.

So yeah. Chrono Trigger owns Secret of Mana.

A better question would be which is better - Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 3.-jay

I want to answer BOTH parts of your post, jay...

First of all, people liked Secret of Mana for a couple of reasons. 1!!!!!! It was a 2 player adventure RPG. that's right, two players at the same time, in a game with character development.
Also, Secret of Mana had HEAVY rpg elements, compared to a slightly less emphasised adventure side. The combat is much more exciting than most full RPGs (except paper mario)
The characters did suck. No question about that. In the end, Chrono Trigger did get my vote, but it wasn't an easy decision. I won't go into all the INFINITE reasons that Chrono Trigger was so good, but to summarize 1: sweet characters, 2: tons of secrets and side quests 3: tons of alternate endings 4: new game +

...... F F 3 (ff6j I assume)
Wow, that is such a tough call.... you know what? I'm going to go with Final Fantasy 3. Because of how much it did for the genre.... so many excellent characters, and all of them with some minor bits of development. Multiple paths, multiple side quests, every now and then the game ACTUALLY TRIED TO CHALLENGE YOU. Which you don't see a lot from Square.. unfortunately the last battle was also a joke, but you get used to that after enough Final Fantasy Games. Optional characters are always a plus, and the plotline was fantastic. No mistake about it, the plotline for final fantasy 3 was why the plotline for 7 was so good. They learned and grew.
Kefka was a sweet villain. Also, the world of Ruin was so impressive, seeing the actual world change to such a startling degree.. Everyone has their own favorite characters. (by the way, what were yours?)

Sabin was pretty hardcore. I mostly liked him becuase his Blitz was so ungodly powerfull though.

I have to say also... Come ON MAN! SHADOW!

I would also have to say though, that Chrono Trigger beats the snot out of FF3. Now I would like to mention that I never had an SNES and played both of these games for the first time as an adolescent, after the playstation Final Fantasy's.

BUMP AGAIN!

What about Chrono vs. FF III vs. FF V (english translation)

I loved the depth of FF V - and it was fun getting ALL my guys to MASTER ALL the roles!!

did I actually say that ff3 tried to challenge you? what was I, drunk? that game was so easy...
anyway, I think the infinite roles games really hurts characterization. I mean, eventually everyone was totally equal, which doesn't help for character identification.
