I have just bought Lain on ebay and Im eagerly awaiting its delivery. I have recently purchased Haibane-Renmei and Now and Then, Here and There box sets.
Started watching Haibane-Renmei which is very cutesy and I quite like it for non stressful fun viewing (good baby sitting tool for young munchkins). Ive only watched the first disc so far so the story line is still in its infancy.

Im very keen on trying to get a copy of Grave of the Fire Flies (I think thats the title), which comes highly recommended by one who knows. Its a movie not a series and very very sad story.

Depressing, yes.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Now and Then, Here and There is an excellent series as well. Kinda sad, kinda frustrating, but all in all it's one of my favorites.

I also love Lain, but if you agree with Matrixman that "incoherentness" in anime is bad... then you either shouldn't watch Lain or you should just be high when you DO watch it. It's a mind-fuck. (Can I say that? Should I say mind-screw instead?)

I have found that my ability to understand and appreciate depressing and incoherent has improved greatly in recent times. Should enjoy both of them then ;)

Just watched the highly recommended Princess Mononoke. Meh.

Alright, maybe "meh" is an exaggeration. I enjoyed it, but it didn't strike me as anything particularly special. But then, I do seem to get on better with series than films when it comes to anime.

I'd recommend just about anything by Miyazaki, with the exception of Pom Poko. It was plain stupid in my opinion. Some Miyazaki that I haven't seen listed so far:

The Cat Returns
Kiki's Delivery Service (a personal favorite of mine)
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro (another favorite)
Porco Rosso

As far as series go, my personal favorite series is Fullmetal Alchemist. If you get Cartoon Network it is still being shown in Adult Swim. It is fabulous! Another good one (and the manga is even better) is Fruits Basket. I also have Shrine of the Morning Mist. I liked Samurai Seven, but have not finished all of it. I don't know if you call it anime or not, but Avatar, the Last Airbender is also quite good, and it is currently on tv as well.

Hope this helps. . .

I understand. If it hadn't been one of the first animes I'd seen, it would probably be in my "It's pretty good" list instead of "I totally recommend it" list. But happy memories bias me :)

But the tree spirits, man! The TREE SPIRITS!! I LOVE me some tree spirits.

Also, I'm gonna go ahead and recommend Witch Hunter Robin. I love me some good ol' demon slayage. :D

 And again, someone recommends something I own but haven't watched. I really went on an anime-buying bender a few months back.

In Mononoke, I liked the little clicky-headed people.

Elfen Lied*
Orphen*
Divergence Eve*
Blood: The Last Vampire*
Hellsing*
Gundam...er...some number...with zeros and eights...

Cowboy Bebop* (or at least, the ones I hadn't seen)
Outlaw Star*
Witch Hunter Robin
Wild Arms (I'm a fan of the game)
Key The Metal Idol

Of those that you haven't watched yet, I've only seen three, and because I'm a brat I'd like to demand that you watch Escaflowne, then Witch Hunter Robin, then The Big O. The rest of them obviously don't matter beings that I haven't seen them ;) Although I HAVE played Wild Arms... hrm... lets make that one number 4.

:D

Not that I'm pushy or anything...

I'm sorry Covenant. As much as I like you, you can NOT have my Jim!! You may, however, have a picture of Jim.

Hmm, perhaps so, but in the interests of fairness I think we should give The Esmer the chance to tell us he's young and nubile as well.
