Maybe he zoomed off to the real world, fathered Covenant and came back! We never hear anything about Covenant's parents, do we? Eh? Kevin Covenant! I think my argument is sound...

...or maybe he didn't die in the Ritual of Desecration, but was instead infected with leprosy, swept to the real world, and had his memories wiped! His family would then be Joan and Roger son of Kevin, heir to despair!

Or! Or! Or! He came to the real world, had an operation and became Linden!

Ah, I'm not making fun of you. Your theory sounds far more plausible than a lot of the theories attempting to connect the Land's past to the real world. (Why does Berek have to be someone special from the Real World? Why does Kevin? Everyone seems to want to insist that this is the case, but I don't really see why...)

No need to apologise, Drew. I merely seized the opportunity for some silliness at the end of a long day

On to a more "serious" discussion... Is there any compelling evidence supporting the assumption that Berek, Damelon, Loric and (presumably) Kevin were given their names during their lifetime? I think it's just as sound to suppose that names such as Giantfriend or Vilesilencer were given to them after death, to honour the highest accomplishment of their lives. If this is the case, then maybe Berek wasn't know as "Heartthew" in his lifetime, and so on: maybe it was just Damelon Berek-son, Loric Damelon-son and Kevin Loric-son.
Consider the following:
When Covenant's face reflected his doubt, the Lord [Mhoram] said, "I assure you. Perhaps it would be well for you to question Bannor concerning the Bloodguard. His distrust may not distress you - when you have come to understand it. His people are the
Haruchai, who live high in the Westron mountains beyond the passes which we now name Guards Gap. In the first years of
Kevin Loricson's High Lordship, they came to the Land."
That was Lord Foul's Bane, chapter 13 - Vespers.
So maybe Kevin was just known as Kevin Loricson until he enacted the Ritual, and then became Kevin Landwaster...

That's quite true, and I thought of it that way during the First Chrons, then forgot with all the intervening events. We've seen what happens when someone is given titles while still alive - they end up with a constantly changing mass of the things. Witness Covenant: Thomas Covenant the...*deep breath* Ur-Lord, White Gold Weilder, Ringthane, Giantfriend, Earthfriend, Illender, Prover of Life...
Since I mention the Ur-Lord title, I think it might be of mild interest to note that Terry Pratchett seems to be an SRD fan. I was reading
The Last Continent today, and at one point Pratchett refers to Rincewind's improvised sandals as "Ur-footwear"

The said can being full of worms.
I thought the alliteration added a little something to it.
BTW:
- are all the UK Watchers primed for the bookshops tomorrow?

- anyone going to Waterstones Deansgate, Manchester for the signing? I'm hoping to get the special Waterstones slipcase edition (£30 big ones - count 'em) from Santa so won't be able to get this copy signed!

The signing on the 11th November? That's the venue for our UK Elohimfest. There's a thread about it in the SRD Discussion section.

Gaaah the frustration... if only I had been able to persuade my brother to get his holidays one week later... why oh why must I visit London on Halloween, and leave one week before SRD comes for the tour?! Why is fate so cruel?! Why does destiny mock me thus?! FOUL!

Hmmm...so I guess to you he is a temperate sort, eh?
So perhaps then his name could be Kelvin Fahrenheitener the Excelsior?
