The Mahdoubt is by far one of my favorites of the "new" characters. Something about her reminds me of the Unfettered One who healed TC in Morinmoss (who is also one of my fave "minor" characters).

I'm not sure what to make of her, though. It looks like she has been a part of Revelstone for a long time, maybe a lot longer than even the Masters have occupied it. The fact that the Ramen seemed to recognize her suggests that she is more than she seems.

My current theory...she is actually some kind of incarnation or agent of the Creator! 8O
Her description and role is sorta like the old beggar in the First and Second Chrons (providing a warning and advice). It probably violates some kind of rule against the Creator being able to act within his creation, but I just thought it would be great to have him/her secretly performing such a small but meaningful role within his/her creation.

Given that the caesures are rents in the fabric of time, perhaps the Creator can actually touch the Land now.

Just a thought.

I don't think so.
The Creator can't affect the Earth or he breaks the Arch.

Who called them "rents" anyway?
Is that from the book?
A rent is a hole or a gap.
To me that's the breaking of the Arch.

I like your "fabric" idea though.
Because you can bend fabric and have two separate points [points in time] touch [caesure] and not rip it[Arch].

Her warnings about love made me wonder if she's Kassy's (supposedly dead) lover.

The Mahdoubt... mother of the Merwives?

Just a speculative thought...

Wow! What a thought!

We know that Kassy's lover gained some knowledge and power from him - but would that be enough to make her pratically immortal?

Well, that's certainly a better idea than my theory. But you know....the Creator is going to have to show up at some point! :?

Well it appears to be a reference to Covenanat and Jerimiah.

I sort of got the feeling its was more about sexual love rather than maternal.

An intersting character no doubt.

To me , she seemed a bit contrived.

She said something like, "The Masters no not what they do."

Yeah, I think "Be cautious of Love," very much a reference to Thomas Covenant.

Another theory  - I think she might be a manifestation of injured time.

Her patchwork dress = moments seemingly stitched together randomly into a whole

She seems to 'see' what is needed and when (see thru time? precognition)

The way she places the tray of food precisely, as if there is the right spot for it.

Mahrtiir initial recognises something about her and questions Liand's statement "She serves?" I read this that he recognises that she is like the Ranyhyn or the Elohim, power incarnate. Only instead of earthpower it is earthpower as specifically manifested as time.

Hmmm... I think the Mahdoubt is truly the only thing we can't make a decent theory on... I mean there isn't much to go by? Why is she a servant of Revelstone? When did she become it? In what way does she serve? What manner of creature is she? What powers does she have? :?

The secret to Mahdoubt could be her name:
Anagram time!
Here's what I came up with.
(Draw your own conclusions )

MAD HUB TO = Ah, here we go! A hub to where though?

A TOMB HUD = Deadly Housing and Urban Developement? Sounds bad for Revelstone!

Dumbo Hat = insulting or cute? I'm not sure.

Bad Mouth = I'm out of ideas.... :?

A NACHO VENTS TOM

Stephen Donaldson = A SODDEN PENN SLOTH (there are hundreds more)

Melenkurion Abatha = A MAKEABLE RHINO NUT

Ah what the hell, go play with some more on www.wordsmith.org/anagram/
