Melanie Rawn
I read a few; I put her in my "soap opera/romance novel that happens to contain fantasy" category.

L.E Modesitt, Jr.
Like. A little hard to penetrate at first, cuz he likes to defer telling you whats going on for a while, but, unlike Gene Wolf, doesn't succeed at it so effortlessly. Then it's really good. Then after about 5 books in I lost interest; he stretched the material too far. Worth 1 read though, *especialy* if you find yourself pondering law vs. chaos (as in, the alignments).

Dennis L. McKiernan
Self proclaimed Tolkien copy-cat who eventually produced some good works. Popcorn reading. Try "Dragondoom".

Enjoyed Melanie Rawns Dragon Prince series a lot. Haven't read the sequel series yet, but Baradakas assures me that they're excellent.

Cheer up. :) Not everyone has the same taste in books (and wouldn't the world be a boring place is they did?). You might like it. :) And if you don't, there's always ebay.

Thanks Duchess, but if I do like them ... please promise me that you won't ban me from The Watch?!

I'm already close to being ejected since I have all of the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind (I haven't read them yet - which I think is why I'm still allowed to post here!).

You don't know the half of it! 8)

Once I get this scanner my girlfriend left me up and running, I'll post some pics ... then you'll see just how "cool" I really am.

Steven Brust
- I've found him nice light reading. I'm not really a fan though.

Melanie Rawn
- I agree about the soap opera/romance category. I found her deadly dull, but then that kind of stuff doesn't interest me in general.

Mercedes Lackey
- I think she's really, really bad in a fangirlish way. Based on the trilogy I read, she writes whiney romance/angst in which characters angst endlessly about their love lifes and parent/child relationships and the actual plot doesn't get much space. Fantasy elements include nauseatingly romantic teen-girlish things like blue-eyed telepathic magic horse companions and reincarnating lovers.

David Farland
- He has good, original ideas. Runelords started pretty well but then started to go downhill. I haven't read the last book in the series so I don't know if it picks up again.

Robert Newcomb
- I haven't read him but he is truly notorious. He has had to pad up his Amazon rating by writing 5-star anonymous reviews of his own books. This came to light when Amazon's website malfunctioned one day.

ChoChiyo wrote:I've read two Modesitt books--The Forever Hero and The Magic of Recluce. They are both good. Very well drawn characters. He's a little wordy--but I like that. Some people do not.
If you made it through Magic of Recluce. read the rest of the Recluse series by Modesitt. They get better and better. Frankly I thought Magic of Recluce started out a bit slow, but by a quarter of the way through I was finally hooked. Modesitt's writing gets better and better as the series progresses.
