Yeah... but, like Myste & SK both said quite clearly, the footnotes add a pseudo-documentary quality. And it's a deliberate literary device, not a random afterthought.

okay so i was up to 1am last night and i finally finished Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.
Couple of questions about the ending:

Was that John Uskglass that reivied Vincilicus? i assumed it was but it was never explicitly stated. Did Stephen Black become a sort of reincarnation of the Raven King?

Whens the sequel coming out?

jay..yes..that was The Raven King, john uskglass, etc,,popping out of nowhere, brought forth by the two protagonists, reviving the Vin.

In regards to the Steven Black Question that's an interesting thougth, honestly don't know, but I am also under the assumption Lurch is right. Many people thought (for some reason) the "Man with the Thistled down hair" was the Raven King, whcih is of course no true, but it was a popular thought.

Anyways jsut as a note, I spoke to Susanna's UK publicist who has said Susanna will gladly participate in an interview over at FBS to pub the release of the paperback edition of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which of course is a incredible coup for us. WIthotu a doubt the sequel will loom large in my questioning.

I think mine was Childermass, although Clarke's idea for Viniculous was just masterful IMHO. John Uskglass...great, great, appearance, just magical.

..i found the Thisle Down Dude to be the spookiest. His danger was malevolent. I found Black's inheritance, how do I say this, predictable?, too politically correct? The circumstances of his inheritance was intriguing tho. The " just desserts" ending for all the characters was well done thru all the twists and turns, a fun and great read of Clarke's imagination...MEL

Enjoyed the book, liked Clarke's writing style, and find that Jonathan Strange is now a favourite character of mine. Deserved all the praise it got, I think.

how long did it take you to read, i got it christmas and finished last week, but i went for periods of up to a month without reading it.

Erm, about two weeks, I think. Went very slowly at first, but read "Jonathan Strange" and "John Uskglass" in three or four days.

..I bought Strange/Norrell at the same time as Runes,,xmas,,After Runes I got to Strange...mind you, my brain needed a different pace after Runes. So, it took me about 3 weeks of leisurely reading with 75 percent of the read in the first 18 to 19 days. The Last 25 percent proved harder to put down...geez I like that book!...MEL

i had so much on recently it was probably the longest time ive ever spent on one book.
Anyway up to pace again with earthsea

Well, I put the book on hold for a while, then jumped back into it (felt guilty, as it sat on my nightstand for a couple of months collecting dust), and am very glad I did. Especially now that "Pottermania" is back. I do think that the first third of the book drags, but it definitely picks up when Strange arrives. I'm now about 2/3's done, and will be sorry to finish.

(They pronounce Norrell like "coral", but I had always pronouced it na-REL, like "hotel". The title has better meter that way, IMO.)

I pronounce it like "coral" as well. I might check this out...an adaptation for screen might actually improve it. Give it some pacing and a bit of action. Book was a bit disappointing, despite having promise.
