RW is a terrific actor (at least when he wants to be), but I'm not sure he can transcend his Robin-Williams-ness enough....and I'm not sure he's got the look I'd like to see in my TC...just MHO, of course.

I wasn't saying Robin Williams for TC...just making a case for comedians transending their usual roles to do drama. Hugh Laurie was gonna due Perry White for the new Superman, but had to back out due to the popularity of House and it's subsequent scheduling conflicts. Perry White is arguably NOT a comedic role.

See, this is my problem with Gary Oldman in a serious role... the things I associate him with, while not always comedic, are antithetical to TC (Rozencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, The Professional, The Fifth Element). Therefore, I can see where Black Adder fans are coming from with Hugh Laurie. But, like whiteblackbird, the first time I saw him as House, I thought, "That guy would make the perfect Covenant!" All a matter of perspective...

Along the same lines, I can't take Robin Williams seriously - he could play the most serious role in the world, and I'd be waiting for the T-Rex impression, a la Mrs. Doubtfire.

I have problems remembering Robin Williams is not Robin Williams all of the time, but I think his dramatic roles are generally very believable. They still draw me in. It's like having a history with someone, and that adds flavor to the whole thing, you know?

There could be someone else out there who would be just as good as HL for the part, but I can't think of anyone. In my opinion he would be perfect, but that's because the mental pic I've had of TC for the past 20 years or so has been identical to his look and personality on House. And he's got this wounded soul---I'm tough and like to make people believe that I need no one, but I really want and need someone to understand me---feel on top of it all.

BTW, one of the eps of House had a person with leprosy. I know the show specializes in unusual disorders, but I wonder if their writers are fans of TC, as well? Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Diverging somewhat from the topic, anybody know if/when House is coming out on DVD? I have class when it comes on, and lousy reception to boot so it's not worth taping.

So far as I can tell, it's not planned yet. Hopefully soon, though.

Also, we know that Laurie turned down the role of Perry White in the next Superman because of a scheduling conflict with House. (CNN, and AintItCool)

Interesting that someone you'd pick for Covenant would also be picked for Perry White...

Hmmmmmmmmm..... See, talking about age, I would think of someone older than HL for Perry White. Then again, with makeup....

Laurie has become quite a flexible actor, I especially like his plummy, old boy network head of MI6 in Spooks.

If he played TC however, I'd be expecting him to burst into his chipmunk-esque rendition of Hey Jude at any moment.

I guess I have the benefit of never having seen HL in anything before I saw House, so I have no prior characters bouncing around in my head. I guess maybe I saw him playing Stuart Little's "father" but that was really a bit part and not memorable at all to me. Other than than, I am a Hugh Laurie virgin.

Anyone see "what dreams may come"? it changes your percheptions of Robin Williams quite a bit, and you stop looking at himas only a comedian

If so, his name's Tim McInnerny. He was in Blackadder, but he's not Hugh Laurie. On the other hand, perhaps Hugh Laurie was in Spooks and I just never noticed.

No it was definitely him, although I only saw him the once so it was probably just a guest appearance. One of our heroes went to meet him a couple of times, at least once at the opera.

Just looked on the IMDB: Hugh Laurie played Jools Siviter in episode 1.4 Traitor's Gate and episode 1.5 The Rose Bed Memoirs.

I've seen a few ads for House lately, it looks really good. Quite different from the Hugh we've all come to know and love.

House is one of the few shows that I watch (almost) regularly. Most of the stuff on TV goes in one eyeball and out the other for me--I haven't had "my show" in years. House has caught my attention pretty regularly in the last couple of months, though. I definitely recommend it.

I think the reason "House" appeals so much is that Hugh Laurie's character is a man who is almost entirely unlikable. He's arrogant, emotionally stunted, with bad personal grooming habits and a nature focused more on solving medical conundrums than helping individual people. In spite of the fact that he's not a very nice person, you can't help but empathize with him over the idiocy of hospital administrators and the unreasonable emotional demands placed on him by his staff. Plus, he's addicted to watching General Hospital.

It occurs to me that Hugh Laurie could also play Adept Havelock in my imaginary Mordant's Need movie with considerable aplomb.

I started this thread early on in the season, and now that we are to summer reruns and I have digested the entire run of season one I am more convinced than ever that Hugh Laurie is definitely the man for the job. So what if he is a bit older? So cast him older, if it gets the part right.
