I believe you will all be pleasantly surprised at this final installment.
As mentioned in a review by another TWOSWF everything appears to dovetail nicely with the OT. From what I've read in the book it also dovetails with events of the first two Episodes of the NT. Some events with Qui-Gon come to mind. Yoda pays Qui-Gon an awesome tribute toward the end of RotS.

It's okay, since you're always blaspheming against Tolkien's books. ;)

I'm only seeing this movie because I'm seeing it for free (like the last two) and it's the end of the prequels. The fact that I consider eps 1 and 2 to be among the worst movies of all time is not enough to deter me.
Among the worst? Lore, I'm sorry, but the Star Wars prequels are towering monuments of human genius when compared with the worst movies of all time. We're talking stuff like "From Justin to Kelly", "Girl in Gold Boots", "Troll 2", "SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2", and, yes,

'Manos' The Hands of Fate
Sorry, but I haven't seen those movies. I tend not to pass judgement until I have.

So if you haven't seen the worst movies of all time, then how can you compare Phantom with them, eh? ;) Because, trust me; whatever you think is a bad movie, Manos will redefine that. ;)

True, but they are among the worst movies for me - and I have seen alot. But I trust you that Manos may be the worst.

Manos is terrible, but it's also not a big-budget blockbuster from a major director and studio. Manos was straight-to-video, it would have been surprising if it was good.

Wait a minute, didn't Luca$ bring us Howard the Duck? Maybe we shouldn't be surprised about the prequels.......

What the hell? Why are we even debating that a movie is as bad as Manos? It's not possible, Cail.

I mean, COME ON:

"I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Master is away."

Torgo.

Also, Manos wasn't straight-to-video, interestingly enough:
The movie was given a gala premiere in El Paso attended by several local dignitaries. Many members of the cast and crew left before the end of the screening out of embarrassmen as people in the audience began to heckle the movie mercilessly just a few minutes into it.

Foul, I'm not saying that the prequels were as bad as Manos (I can't believe that stinker went to the theaters!). I am saying that the plot, acting and dialogue in them is bad. Really bad. They're not terrible films of the magnitude of Manos, or Alone in the Dark, but they are tremendous let-downs given their pedigree.

I still don't understand the bad dialogue argument. Could somebody explain that to me?

I will agree that they were let-downs, in terms of what they had to live up to (it's hard to imagine anything matching that hype). I will say that there was a great share of bad acting, but I blame that not on the actors but what they had to work with (the writing and direction of Lucas). Had the film had a Kershner in the director's seat (or some characters that you can attach yourself to emotionally, like in Empire), then we'd be celebrating these prequels, rather than reviling.

I personally have enjoyed them, regardless, as I've said before. I find that there are redeeming qualities in the movies (Palpatine, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Christopher Lee, the light saber duels, the overall visual splendor). I also think that most people did find enjoyable elements in the film, but they instead choose to ignore that fact and jump on the prequel-bashing bandwagon. It's an easy path, to be sure.

These movies are all really meant as one part of a huge mosaic, anyway. Perhaps they will look better when Episode III comes into place and completes the unfinished puzzle. I somehow doubt it, but it just might.
dlbpharmd wrote:I still don't understand the bad dialogue argument. Could somebody explain that to me?
One example: Anakin in Episode II.
Anakin: From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm with you again... I'm in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you- I can't breath. I'm haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating... hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me... what can I do?- I will do anything you ask.
[uncomfortable pause]
Anakin: ... if you are suffering as much as I am, PLEASE, tell me.
Padme: We used to come here for school retreat. We would swim to that island every day. I love the water. We used to lie out on the sand and let the sun dry us and try to guess the names of the birds singing.
Anakin: I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.
Anakin: I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM.

Maybe a better actor could work something with that stuff, but the fact that Hayden is not a good actor only makes the dialogue worse. He sounds like a petulant child whenever he's angry; he just doesn't convince me that he'll become the Dark Lord Vader.

When I was listening to those lines in theaters, I felt embarrassed. That about sums it up for me. If you don't think the dialogue is bad, then you don't; it's completely subjective. To me, a great deal of dialogue in the prequels sounds like Lucas's typewriter talking, not the characters.
